Hot time for iGrill
The folks at iDevices in Canton have been on a bit of magic carpet
ride with their iGrill product. Great promotion seems to follow the
grilling product, which uses an app to communicate with smartphones,
wherever it goes.
First it won a major award at Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas
in January 2011 that brought it national acclaim. Now it’s received
the blessing of Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook.
One recent evening Zuckerberg tweeted to his legions of followers,
“I updated my grilling app, iGrill, today and it now has Facebook
integration that lets you see what other people are grilling right
now around the world. Awesome. I’m making a Fred’s steak.”
After that comment, the iGrill site was inundated with visitors,
causing the site to go down for two hours.
That prompted a happy statement from Chris Allen, CEO of iDevices,
“We were caught totally off Guard by Mark Zuckerberg’s post and the
immediate influx of traffic. We had quietly released this update for
our users … and were waiting for it to gain traction, but this
obviously gives us a huge head start, thus a quick add on of servers
and bandwidth was needed. We are excited to see how this unfolds,
but I would like to dispel the rumors that iGrill or iDevices
received any investment from Mr. Zuckerberg to date, although we
would welcome the opportunity to work with him, this is not
something that has occurred yet.
What transpired for iGrill was an immediate spike in sales. Karen
Thomas , the company’s spokeperson, said sales spiked for the $79.99
product with 2,000 sold in the following days. According to an NPR
news article, sales of iGrill spiked 500 percent after the glowing
recommendation.

Bluetooth 4.0 Integration with iPhone 5
A new
feature of the iPhone 5 is the further integration of Bluetooth 4.0,
which was first introduced in the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 5’s Bluetooth
4.0 technology works with “idevices,” creating a connection that
consumes only a small percentage of the power of the previous version of
Bluetooth 2.0. It also enables devices to be powered by small,
coin-cell batteries or paper thin batteries, both of which iDevices is
in co-development with its partners. This provides a significantly
longer battery life and lower production cost. In addition,
Bluetooth 4.0 also diminishes the need for users to go through the
pairing process to connect their devices, making Bluetooth 4.0 device an
easier experience for the end user.
“We are
excited to see that Apple is focusing on the continued deployment of
Bluetooth 4.0 technology with the iPhone 5. It’s these types of
enhancements from Apple that allow companies, like ourselves, to
continue to release cutting edge app-enabled products to the consumer.
We are currently in development on a number of new Bluetooth 4.0
products and we are extremely excited to see the market’s reaction to
these new products,” said Christopher Allen, CEO, iDevices, LLC.
iDevices Consulting Works with Companies to App-Enable their Products
In
addition to producing award winning Bluetooth products, including the
iGrill meat thermometer and iShower water-resistant shower speaker,
iDevices also helps other companies incorporate Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to
app-enable their products with its iDevices Consulting Division.
“iDevices Consulting is already working with a number of companies to
utilize our Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi expertise so they too can capitalize
on this cutting edge technology to enhance their customers user
experience with the iPhone 5.This new technology will broaden
the capabilities for hundreds, if not thousands, of app-enabled
products, with explosive growth over the next 12-18 months,”said Christopher Allen, CEO,
iDevices, LLC. “iDevices Consulting is extremely well positioned to
take advantage of the new Bluetooth technology in this dynamic new
market.”
Founded in
2010, iDevices began its journey with the development of the iGrill
Bluetooth cooking thermometer, one of the first app-enabled devices.
iGrill is also one of the first devices to integrate with Facebook,
allowing cooks and grillers to leverage the power of social networking.
With the successful iGrill product launch, iDevices has emerged as a
premier development and consulting company in the app-enabled market.
In 2012, iDevices launched iShower, a Bluetooth-enabled, water resistant
speaker that can be paired with many of the most popular smartphones and
tablets.
iDevices
provides all required resources in-house to create and launch
app-enabled products both independently and with partner companies.
Consumer product companies and manufacturers seek out iDevices to
provide strategic direction and development support for the
incorporation of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity to mobile platforms
and tablets for their products. For more information, see iDevices at

About.com Awards GoSmart Stylus 10
out of 10 Rating by Sue Chastain! "The GoSmart Stylus is one of the best
see-though stylus designs I have seen yet."
What's the
Best iPad Stylus for Touch Screen Tablets?
By Sue Chastain, About.com Guide
GoSmart Stylus Series 200 and 300
The GoSmart Stylus offers a unique cross-hair
tip which provides an unblocked view of the
drawing point on your screen, for more
precision. The stainless steel tip is coated
with Teflon so it won't scratch your tablet's
screen.
GoSmart Stylus
The GoSmart Stylus is one of the best see-though
stylus designs I have seen yet. The GoSmart
stylus comes in two different styles--a pen
style (Series 200) and a rocket shape (Series
300). Both styles feature a small stainless
steel cross-hair tip attached with a stiff
spring which allows the tip to flex to any
angle.
The surface of the metal tip is coated with
Teflon so it glides easily on both bare screens
and screen protectors. I used the GoSmart stylus
on a matte screen protector and it did not
scratch the screen, although when painting long
strokes it made a squeaky, scraping noise which
I found a bit annoying. This was only an issue
while painting and drawing, and may not be an
issue with other kinds of screen protector
films. There was minimal noise when taking notes
and performing other movements with the stylus.
The GoSmart stylus has four very small but
strong rare-earth magnets embedded in the pen
body (two per side) which allows it to stick to
the magnets in the iPad and the Smart Cover. I
thought the protective caps that come with each
stylus would prevent the magnets from attaching
securely to the iPad, but they don't interfere
at all. The rocket-shaped Series 300 stylus
seems to hold on a little better than the
pen-shaped Series 200 design, perhaps because
the rocket cap is a soft silicone and the pen
cap is a hard plastic.
Both GoSmart designs are about 5 1/2 inches in
length, and are made of solid aluminum with a
matte outer texture that feels nice in the hand.
Before I held the two designs, I thought I would
prefer the simpler pen-shaped design, but I
found the rocket shape felt better in use. Both
caps prevent the stylus from rolling, but the
cap for the Series 300 (rocket) allows you to
stand it on end. The caps for both styles can be
put on the back of the pen handle when it's in
use, so the caps won't get lost. The body of the
stylus is a metallic gray, and the caps are
available in four color options--red, blue,
black, and white.
The price of the GoSmart stylus is reasonable at
$24.95, and you can buy replacement tips for $6,
which is good because the tip looks like it
could get mangled pretty easily if you're not
careful with it.
Despite the unpleasant noise I experienced when
painting with this stylus, I really enjoyed
using it. It provides more screen visibility
than any other stylus I have used, making it
very precise. For note-taking I was able write
very small--clearly and with confidence. It's
not the first stylus I'd grab for artistic work,
but it's the best I've used for fine detail
work. It performs very well for note-taking and
general use.
If you're looking for a stylus primarily for
artistic endeavors, you might want the GoSmart
for detail work alongside something else like
the Nomad Brush, but for all-around performance
and excellent precision, this stylus is a
winner.
GoSmart Stylus Pros:
•Stylus tip is replaceable.
•Includes a cap to protect the tip. Series 200
cap includes a clip.
•Magnets hold the stylus securely to the iPad or
smart cover.
•Lightweight and feels good in the hand.
•Priced reasonably.
GoSmart Stylus Cons:
•Tip looks a bit fragile.
•Makes noise with long strokes on some screen
protectors.

GoSmart Stylus Duo: a Technical Leap Forward
In-Depth Review
John Martellaro 3:20 PM ET, Jul. 31st, 2012
GoSmart has introduced a pair of styluses that advance
the stylus technology by using a Teflon impregnated stainless steel nib.
It looks like a miniature radio antenna, but has very specific design
elements that assist the stylus user. Plus, they look good and feel good
in the hand.
_________________
If you’ve been following this series on styluses, you know that my
primary interests are the length of the stylus, the feel as one holds
it, and the nib. How does the nib glide, and is it replaceable?
The Technology
This new pair of styluses advances the state of the art in stylus tips
(nibs) by using a stainless steel filament as the tip assembly. The
steel is impregnated with Teflon all the way through, so it’s not a
surface treatment that will eventually wear away. Plus, in terms of
hardness, the steel that’s used is not as hard as the Gorilla glass, so
it wouldn’t scratch it anyway,
according to the developer.
No, it’s not a TV antenna! This is your new nib.
The advantages of this kind of tip are, according to GoSmart:
•Easy to see through for accuracy
•It glides smoothly for writing or drawing
•It’s quiet
•It’s strong but flexible
The outer ring makes the touch screen think that it’s a finger-like
object. Without that outer ring, the stylus wouldn’t work.
In my experience with the stylus, I have to agree with those claims.
While the steel tip looks ominous, the Teflon makes all the difference
and completely changes the nature of the experience.
Look and Feel
One of my major gripes about styluses is their length. If a stylus is
less than five inches (127 mm), I feel like I’m holding a stubby pencil
or a crayon. The right kind of feel and balance just isn’t there. Plus,
unlike some styluses, the caps that protect the nib fit back on in a
pleasing way that remains functional.
Model 200 (above), model 300 (below) Caps on.
As you can see from the photo below, when the cap is removed and placed
on the back, the length of the 200 is over 6.25-inches and the 300 is
still a very respectable 5.5 inches. I really liked the feel, in my
hand, of both of these styluses. May I say it? Size matters. I should
also note that I had an odd sensation using this kind of tip for the
first time, perhaps because I’m so accustomed to the soft nibs. Or I was
afraid I’d break it. However, after some extensive use, I now actually
like it better. I very much appreciate the very smooth glide of Teflon
on glass.
With caps on the tail, the stylus is easy to handle and the cap isn’t
lost.
The 300 model can be stood on its tail, if desired, just like a 1950’s
Buck Rogers spaceship, for effect, but I wouldn’t recommend it. It would
be all too easy to injure yourself with a wayward hand movement. Better,
lay it on the desk and the fins will keep it from rolling.
When the cap is placed on the tail, the stylus transforms its appearance
from a stiletto V-2 rocket to a more stubby air-to-air missile. You
gotta love it. A stylus after my heart. For the less adventurous, the
200 is the standard cylindrical design with a plastic cap and pocket
clip.
Both have rare-earth magnets imbedded in the sides so that they can be
attached to an iPad. Or a metal part of your desk so it doesn’t get
lost. And I think, with modern technology, there isn’t any real concern
anymore about having magnets laying around.
Utilizes magnets in the iPad edge.
Packaging
The plastic case, with notes on the back, and a paper seal are all first
class. The plastic is thick, and it it’s the best stylus packaging I’ve
seen to date. It’s almost painful to throw it away, but that doesn’t
mean I want the developer to cut back here. As I’ve said before, pride
in the product is reflected via pride in the packaging — which creates
the new customer experience. Just ask Apple about that.
Both models come with red, silver, blue or black caps. The pen itself is
a grayish-silver.
Tip Replacement
The stainless steel tips are replaceable. You can purchase two
replacement tips when you order for US$7. According to the developer,
“the process is to gently grab the tip with your fingers and start
rotating the body as you pull gently to remove the tip. Reverse the
process for inserting the (new)tip. Of course, if there is an obvious
failure in workmanship or the stylus is defective, GoSmart will replace
it.
Availability
Both the 200 and 300 will be available on August 8, 2012 and are
available now for pre-order.
Model 300 (top, cap off), model 200 (bottom, cap on)
Summary
There are lots of things to like about these styluses. The length is
terrific. The tip technology is a leap ahead of soft, rubbery nibs that
can tear or wear out. The magnets keep the stylus attached to your iPad.
They look great and feel nicely balanced, with good heft and a very
technical satin metal feel.
One could buy an everyday stylus that’s designed to look like a fountain
pen, but for the technically minded, these styluses stand out. The nib
technology looks to be improved, and they’ll appeal to someone who wants
more geek-factor than an plain jane pen. Best of all, the price is
terrific, on par with or better than the best styluses I’ve previously
reviewed.
You will want one of these. Consider it a personal, technical
exploration.

http://apps.facebook.com/contestshq/contests/251047/prize_giving,
with prizes of up to $250 for free canvas wraps
awarded for the most creativeideas on how to
take advantage of CG Pro Prints’ value for professional
photographers to increase their bottom line and/or reach more
clients. Contestants were asked: Are you bundling canvas with your
photo shoots? Displaying the canvas in your studio? Offering
groupings? Partnering with the local coffee shop to display and
sell your prints? Share your success strategy and inspire your
colleagues!
Three Successful Ways to Increase Sales
for Professional Photographers & Artists:
1.Print ‘em! – just
order the canvas:
At only $22.99 for a
16x20 premium quality Canvas Gallery Wrap through CG Pro Prints,
photographers are able to sell canvases to every client. First
Place Contest Winner, Danielle Mavrick said, “I’ve found that an
amazing way to sell (and only possible through CG Pro Prints because
of pricing) is to just order the canvas! I’ll ask the client which
image is her favorite, then print it. Sometimes as a 16x20 or maybe
even two 11x14s. Once I show it to them (and tell them I’ve ordered
it as a sample), they always want it. Works perfectly!"
2.Build from the Bricks You Have -
offer to print photos on canvas from a past session:
Second Place Contest
Winner Janine Thurston fills in sales lulls by emailing clients with
special offers to print photos from past sessions on canvas.
“Adding a couple thousand in canvas print sales during a slower
period has allowed us to keep a very even stream of cash-flow,and clients have LOVED them,” said Thurston.
3.Wedding Day Gift -
gift a canvas to the bride & groom:
Another successful
strategy is to gift a canvas to the bride and groom from the wedding
shoot to display at the wedding reception. “All of the guests at
the reception will see the beautiful canvas sitting on the gift
table, which will generate buzz about your business,” said CG Pro
Prints’ Contest Third Place Winner Benjamin L. Corey.

Macworld
Australia Awards foxL PLATINUM "5 Mice out of 5" "Editor's Pick" Award by
Dave Bullard: “Enter the pimped-up Platinum edition...It now gets the full
five mice – and an Editor’s Pick to boot.”
The original
foxL V2.2 Bluetooth is a speaker that has been engineered by a
rocket scientist – soundmatters founder Dr Godehard Guenther, who is
a physicist and former NASA engineer with three PhDs – to produce
audiophile-quality sound despite only being about the length of an
adult hand.
When we reviewed it back in October 2011 we said the audio quality
was “nothing short of astounding for a unit measuring 14.3cm x 5.5cm
x 3.5cm”.
“It’s a big, full sound,” we went on, “with a surprisingly wide
frequency response (80Hz-20kHz) and a decent soundfield that almost
hides the source of the music.
“It’s clear, smooth and, most importantly, engaging. Anyone who uses
the foxL just wants to keep playing their favourite tracks because
it’s just such … fun.”
We gave it four-and-a-half mice, only stopping short of giving it
top marks because of a low-level hum emitted when the Bluetooth
circuit was turned on.
Enter the pimped-up Platinum edition, and we have no more
reservations about its abilities. It now gets the full five mice –
and an Editor’s Pick to boot.
This model is basically the same as the V2.2 Bluetooth, but is
silver in colour instead of black, has a 20-hour battery life
instead of 12, and includes an AudioQuest Evergreen audio cable for
‘ultimate fidelity’.
It also adds support for aptX Bluetooth – a technology which
developer CSR says delivers a wireless audio quality which is
indistinguishable from wired. This is good news for those using Macs
running OS X 10.6.5 or later, but as yet no iOS devices or iPods
support it.
Mind you, having said that, with the foxL we got a fuller Bluetooth
sound with less interference when using our iPhone as the source
than when using our aptX- enabled MacBook Pro. Go figure.
But speaking about a full sound, if you want the ultimate audio
experience from a unit of this size then hook up the AudioQuest
cable, sit back and be amazed.
Not only does everything we said about the V2.2 above still stand,
but the dynamics are even better than before, and the amount of bass
(down to 80Hz) is almost unbelievable, especially if the unit is
placed close to a wall.
The foxL features two ‘Twoofers’ – 1in tweeters that also woof –
driven by four digital amplifiers delivering up to 8W of power.
That amazing bass is pumped through the back of the unit via a
BassBattery, which is a very clever rechargeable Lithium-ion battery
combined with an acoustic bass radiator – an unpowered panel which
extends the bass by resonating at a frequency lower than the active,
or wired, woofers.
The grille protecting the BassBattery flips out to act as a stand.
Next to it are power and volume buttons, and insert holes for the
included wrist-strap or a lanyard.
On the sides are a 3.5mm Aux-in port, a Mini-USB input for charging
from a Mac, a power input port and a second 3.5mm mini-jack for
connecting an optional SUBstage powered subwoofer.
Like most Bluetooth speakers, the Platinum is able to handle phone
calls, pausing the music to receive a call. A front-mounted noise-cancelling
mic works better than most we’ve reviewed, providing for clear,
strong in-call audio.
Macworld Australia’s buying advice.
The foxL V2.2 Bluetooth is still a very good buy, but for an extra
$50 the Platinum edition is the best mini speaker on the market.

styluses. The GoSmart Stylus’ tip is strong and flexible at the

Two Models with
Aesthetic Design – No Tapping Noise When Taking Notes

where the tip is touching, the GoSmart Stylus’ unique see-through tip
gives you clear precision to click smarter.”

Features foxLv2 in “Gadget Review: The FoxLv2 Personal Professional
Loudspeaker – This is Rocket Science” by Bruce Owens! “This is a best of
breed gadget for the musician, audiophile, or movie fan that wants quality
audio at home or on the run.”
Gadget
Review: The FoxLv2 Personal Professional Loudspeaker – This is Rocket
Science by Bruce Owens on July 15, 2012
I recently was shipped the foxLv2 Personal Professional Loudspeaker for
review. My first impression upon seeing this unit was “ok it is small
and compact, cute – but how does this sound”. I imagined the foxLv2
would sound like a quality computer speaker and nothing more. I could
not have been more wrong. This little powerhouse is a mere 5.6 x 2.2 x
1.4 inches and kicks out 4 watts of power. This is a very efficient 4
watts because the foxLv2 easily fills a room with music. The tiny unit
has two “Twoofers” that produce crystal highs and realistic thumping
bass.
The first test I put the foxLv2 through was using it with my Motorola
Droid 4. The Droid and the foxLv2 found each outer via Bluetooth with no
effort on my part. I simply needed to push play on my music library and
I was in business. Even with the phone 10 to 20 feet way from the foxLv2
the music was clear and loud. In wondering how the foxLv2 would perform
with other audio apps on the phone I fired up the mobile Netflix app.
This is amazing I am getting home theater quality audio and HD video
from two devices that fit in my pocket.
The foxLv2 gives the user 8 hours of house rocking Bluetooth
performance, with an audio cable I found myself getting 2+ days of use
in the office with my old school iPod nano. If you want to shake the
house loose from its foundation the FoxL has an output to connect a
sub-woofer.
What initially drew me to this device was how Guns N’ Roses Guitarist
Richard Fortus and shred guitar goddess The Great Kat were using the
foxLv2 as a portable guitar amp. I plugged my Gibson Les Paul
Traditional through the foxLv2 via my Vox Amplug Metal headphone amp.
The tone and response was as if I was playing through a Marshall JCM 800
stack. The sound is loud and powerful with beautiful harmonics and
perfect articulation. The fun part of this is I am able to place the
foxLv2 in my pocket and stroll around my backyard shreding away. This is
a great practice amp option that fits neatly in my gigbag and gives me
total freedom from AC power.
This is a best of breed gadget for the musician, audiophile, or movie
fan that wants quality audio at home or on the run. The FoxL even comes
with a built in noice-canceling microphone for the business user for
wireless speaker phone/conferencing.
If you are reading this saying to yourself this is not rocket science
the foxLv2 is just another portable speaker keep this in mind.
Soundmatters International, Inc. the maker of the foxLv2 was founded by
physicist, former NASA engineer, and audio design legend Dr. Godehard
Guenther.
The foxLv2 has a street price of $199 a more than reasonable price for
such a quality and versatile piece of audio equipment. The foxLv2 comes
with an impressive accessory kit that includes AC adapter, USB cable,
3.5mm audio cable, travel pouch and anti-slip acoustic mat. Bike mount
kits, car mount kits and Soundmatters UKpro10 Mini Travel Trunk are also
available accessory upgrades. The foxLv2 Bluetooth is available
immediately through major online retailers, including Crutchfield,
ListenUp.com, Amazon.com and more.

Features foxL & bike mount in Summer fitness accessories
"Reward yourself for working out this summer with these new fitness
products."
Skipping
your workout can be a huge temptation when the sun blazes overhead and a
cool oasis beckons. USA TODAY picked six great gadgets that will help
you forget the heat and stay active this summer.
Born to ride
Taking your music on long bike rides gives you the extra kick you need
to climb hills and endure long flats. FoxL is a super-light Bluetooth
system by Soundmatters that fits on handlebars. It is 5.6 inches long
and weighs 9.5 ounces. The stereo sound is rich — and safer than wearing
ear buds attached to a phone or MP3 player.
The lithium battery might last longer than your legs: It has up to five
hours of life and is rechargeable. Spend a couple seconds syncing your
iPhone or Blackberry and hit the road. If you're hooked on a bike
computer and have it mounted on one side of your handlebars, this unit
fits beside it or on the other side. Speakers, $199; mounting kit, $34.

Bluetooth Portable Speaker Review: Sweet, Bass-Thumping Sound By Matt Peckham | July 2,
2012
I’m usually
not susceptible to stunt-pitching, but when the speaker wonks at
Soundmatters lobbed an email for the company’s $200
foxLv2
portable Bluetooth speaker at the universe with a blurb from The
Great Kat, well…
I wasn’t expecting to see that name again, 20 years after first
running across it in a post-Yngwie Malmsteen funk. The Great Kat? Of
“Beethoven on Speed” fame? Using it as a traveling practice amp?
Mission accomplished! I asked to give the baseline model a whirl.
Alas, I can’t endorse it as a traveling wireless practice amp,
because you’d need a Bluetooth instrument like a guitar or keyboard,
and those don’t really exist (nor, given all of Bluetooth’s audio
idiosyncrasies, is that tech coming anytime soon).
But I’ve been playing with the foxLv2 for a week now, and I can say
it’s easily the least problematic, best more-than-decent-sounding
ultraportable wireless speaker for laptop or mobile phone music and
wired instrument playback I’ve laid ears on. In fact — spoilers! —
my only real quibble with the speaker is its name, which sounds more
like a generic spaceship in a Kim Stanley Robinson novel than what’s
supposed to be a hip, high-end, pocket-sized speaker.
Out of the Box
The foxLv2 unit itself, or “foxL version 2″ – the original version
debuted in 2008 — is about the length of a small TV remote and
roughly twice as thick. It’s also twice as heavy, probably due to
its pair of one-inch linear magnetic drive speakers, dubbed
“Twoofers” by Soundmatters. The whole thing weighs 269 grams, or a
little more than a can of soda. I don’t subscribe to the “quality by
weight” school of thought, but this thing has definite heft for its
size — 5.6 x 2.2 x 1.4 inches — so if it matters, consider that box
checked.
The dome-style stereo speakers themselves bulge ever-so-slightly
from the foxLv2′s left and right side, covered by a rigid metal-like
(but actually glass composite) mesh with a beehive pattern and
openings small enough to keep the insides well-protected from all
but the smallest particles. The speakers are just shy of three
inches apart, offering basic stereo separation, though the stereo
field itself is obviously much smaller.
Between the speakers sits a trapezoidal shape bearing the
Soundmatters logo and a pairing button that doubles as a light
indicating Bluetooth connectivity by blinking fast or slow. Just to
the right of this lies a noise canceling microphone (yes, an actual
microphone) in the event you want to use the thing as a monaural
Bluetooth speakerphone. I didn’t do much serious testing of the mic,
but in several iPhone 4-based conversations, the people I called had
no problem hearing and understanding me, but complained of unusually
loud and continuous background noise. I’m not sure I’d bother with
it, given most of the kinds of devices — computers, smartphones —
you’d connect to the foxLv2 already have their own respectable
speakerphone options.
On the right side (facing the speaker) you have a mini-USB connector
for charging a battery that’s rated for up to six hours of
continuous audio playback via Bluetooth or 12 hours direct-wired, an
LED charge indicator and a 3.5mm stereo mini-jack for connecting an
external subwoofer. On the left, there’s a 5V power input and
another 3.5mm stereo mini-jack for connecting other audio devices,
say you want to plug in an instrument or just bypass Bluetooth and
run direct from your computer or mobile phone.
The foxLv2 comes with both USB and AC power cables, a 3.5mm audio
cable, a cinch-tie soft case and carrying strap, a rubber placement
mat (to keep it from vibrating around the table), as well as
international plug adapters, say you want to carry the foxLv2 with
you abroad.
Flip the foxLv2 around and you’ll find the power switch, manual
volume up/down buttons and a hinged grille you can flip open like
the brace on the back of a picture frame to provide extra stability.
Not that the speaker really needs it — even with the grille tucked
flush against the back, it feels reasonably stable with its two
nearly inch-long rubber feet pitching the frame slightly up, the
speakers aimed out at about a 45-degree angle and all of that
resting on the unit’s slightly narrower back piece.
Setup
Power the foxLv2 on and you’ll hear a quiet beep (much less annoying
than the HMDX Jam‘s), after which it’ll attempt to establish a
device link. Pairing the foxLv2 to my Retina MacBook Pro was a snap
using Apple’s Bluetooth Setup Assistant — you’ll need a device
that’s A2DP (advanced audio distribution profile capable, stereo
audio, one-way) compatible, which includes nearly all mobile phones
and laptops of recent vintage.
Since I have several other audio devices connected to my computer
(an Apogee One, an M-Audio FastTrack Pro) I had to manually tell the
computer to “Use as Audio Device,” after which the foxLv2 usually
did as instructed. I did experience occasional Bluetooth audio pops
and clicks, though far less frequently than with the HMDX Jam — your
mileage may vary, since this is an ongoing issue with Bluetooth
itself. Also: The foxLv2 was selectable in OS X’s audio output
dialogue box in either stereo and non-stereo configurations, but the
non-stereo option produced badly attenuated playback sound, so
you’ll (obviously) want the stereo option, which is where the foxLv2
shines.
I did have some odd re-pairing issues, where after a few minutes of
inactivity the foxLv2 would beep and power down. All well and good,
but initiating Bluetooth audio playback after this happened resulted
in error messages saying the Bluetooth device wasn’t available. I
had to manually power the foxLv2 off and back on to get it to
reconnect properly.
When you fire up a track in iTunes, the foxLv2 emits another low
beep, then — after the usual 1-2 second wakeup delay — begins
playing the selected song. I tested listening intermittently to
lossless audio versions of Muse’s “Apocalypse Please,” Michael
Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’,” Phish’s “Llama,” Glenn
Gould’s performance of Bach’s Partita No. 1 and Medeski, Martin &
Wood’s “Bubblehouse” to put the speakers through their paces.
High- and mid-range audio was generally clear and well-articulated,
though the mid-range sometimes sounded over-boosted or slightly
hollow when compared to playback through my flat M-Audio D2 studio
monitors, foregrounding the hammering piano and Matthew Bellamy’s
vocals in “Apocalypse Please” at the expense of Christopher
Wolstenholme’s relentless bass line. If you do elect to bypass
Bluetooth and go with a direct 3.5mm cable connection, the audio
quality definitely improves, to the point that my criticism of the
mid-range evaporates. But it’s probably the foxLv2′s ability to
carry off bass-heavy music at high amplitudes with little audio
distortion that’s most impressive about this little speaker.
The rear grille sits in front of something Soundmatters calls a
“BassBattery” — a piece of rubber that’s actually a miniature
version of the company’s “moving-wall” passive bass radiators, which
it employs in its line of subwoofers. And here’s the clever part:
the lithium-ion battery is actually inside the rubber, allowing it
to be both a woofer and double as an acoustic suspension bass driver
(thereby reducing bass distortion). According to Soundmatters:
“Moving the battery from the inside of the speaker to become part of
a ‘moving-wall’ radiator, frees up critical internal airspace to
drive the bass.”
Crank up anything by acid jazz/funk group Medeski, Martin & Wood and
the foxLv2 really struts its stuff, sending big, clean, thumping
bass and drums (no muddiness here) throbbing through whatever object
you’ve set the unit on without a trace of mid- or high-frequency
distortion. You can really crank this thing to impressive levels,
easily filling a mid-sized room, especially if you’re running off AC
power, which “doubles” the system’s power — 4 watts on battery
versus 8 watts off AC — and mitigates the likelihood of its
“protection circuit” kicking in (it’ll do so at high playback levels
to protect the speakers,
according to Soundmatters’ FAQ).
I tested in a large room with 10-foot ceilings using both Bluetooth
and wired audio and had no problems hearing the foxLv2 from any
point in the room. The audio can warp slightly at the foxLv2′s
amplitude threshold, i.e. source and unit levels jacked, but
assuming you’re not planning to use this thing for a rave and you
run it at moderate volume levels, it’s completely distortion-free.
Conclusion
And so we come to the name. Why not something sexy, like “Jambox” or
“SoundLink”? I mean, “foxLv2″? Who names their prestige “personal
audiophile loudspeaker” speaker after something that sounds like the
Sector X level in a 1993 Nintendo game, or maybe the elite black ops
group in Konami’s Metal Gear Solid?
Okay, so it’s actually the name of Soundmatters’ founder Dr.
Godehard Guenther’s grandson, which officially qualifies it as
endearing. It just feels like it needs a little something extra. “FoxBox”?
“FoxRox”? (I know, don’t hire me all at once.)
Kidding aside, the foxLv2 is easily the best-sounding pocket-sized
2.1-channel audio playback device I’ve ever tested, slightly smaller
and notably clearer-sounding than Jawbone’s $200 Jambox (and a lot
smaller than the improved-sounding but more expensive $300 Big
Jambox). The irony: Soundmatters says it supplies the audio
technology inside all of Jambox’s speakers.
Alternatively, Soundmatters offers a $150 version of the foxLv2
that’s wired-only (no Bluetooth), if you’d rather not grapple with
Bluetooth’s idiosyncrasies, and there’s also a $250 “platinum” model
with even better battery life that uses aptX’s “CD-quality”
Bluetooth streaming technology (I’ll be testing the latter shortly).

she goes, when a full-sized guitar stack amp would be impractical:
warming up before recording sessions, at her NY City apartment, and on
tour. “I use the foxL with my guitar plugged into my metal pedal
and guitar processor to shred Beethoven, Bach, Paganini -- even ‘The
Flight of the Bumble-Bee’ at 300 BPM with total articulation – Amazing!”
said The Great Kat.

Card Sized Scanner: "Travel expense

Travel
expense headaches? Apps and scanners ease the pain
Recording
travel expenses, in the shape of bills and receipts, can be one of the
most frustrating aspects of doing business on the road. A number of
gadgets aim to simplify this chore. The Planon Slimscan (pictured) is a
credit card-sized scanner.
By Eoghan
Macguire, CNN

(CNN) -- Recording traveling expenses can be one the most
frustrating aspects of the business traveler's busy life on the road.
Restaurant bills, train tickets, hotel receipts; they all have to be
accurately accounted for.
This can be a time consuming chore, but an array of high-tech devices
have hit the market with the aim of simplifying the process.
According to Duncan Bell, operations editor of tech magazine T3, receipt
scanners and, to a greater extent, smartphone apps, are the main drivers
of these developments.
"Technology has made quite major changes in terms of how people do their
expenses -- particularly in larger companies," Bell says.
"Whereas before it was inevitably hand written, and then later typed
into a spreadsheet, which involved bringing expenses into the office,
now it can be done on the fly on a variety of different technologies,"
he adds.
Bell took a look at some of the most prominent products that are
streamlining the expenses process.
Planon Slimscan
The Planon
Slimscan is a pocket-sized scanner that enables users to record
small receipts, business cards and all manner of other expenses-related
paperwork.
It's a device that looks "impressive" and is easy to carry around, says
Bell.
Given its diminutive size, however, the Planon Slimscan is unable to
scan larger items of paperwork, such as hotel or taxi receipts, he adds.
"They're not actually physically wide enough to actually scan them
(larger paperwork) in," Bell says.
Taking the pain out of doing expenses "(It's) something that you produce
with a flourish from your wallet ... but is overshadowed by the
usability element," he concludes.

ScanStik SK600: Ultra-Portable Scanning
By Jonathan H. Liu Categories: Electronic Geek, Toys and
Technology
ScanStik SK600 — a little bit bigger than a Sharpie.
I remember the first time I got to use a scanner: it was during high
school, and the photography teacher had the only one in the school. I
was able to scan a few things during art class, and then tried to teach
myself Photoshop with some grainy versions of a photo. Then, in college,
one of my roommates got himself a handheld scanner. It had a cord, could
only handle things up to about five inches wide, and was it wasn’t
small. Plus, you had to move really slowly and it was easy to get a
crooked or warped scan.
ScanStik accepts Micro SD cards.
Since then, flatbed scanners have gotten
much cheaper — I’ve had stand-alone scanners and the integrated
all-in-one printers. It’s nice having a flatbed for the stability and
size, but they take up a lot of desk space (especially since you need to
be able to lift the lid). For doing a quick scan of a small item — say,
to grab an image of a few cards for a board game review — it would be
nice to have something a bit quicker.
We’ve had a few reviews recently of portable scanners, like the ScanSnap
and the Doxie Go. Here’s one more portable scanner to consider: the
ScanStik.
Bottom of Scanstik, showing the image sensor and rollers.
It’s slightly thicker than a Sharpie and
maybe twice as long (9.3″), but it can scan a letter-sized sheet of
paper in about 4 seconds, at up to 600dpi in full color. It’s battery
operated, and the Micro SD slot can handle cards up to 32GB (though
you’ll need to provide your own). Once you’ve scanned things, you just
plug the scanner into your computer with the included USB cable, and
Slim leather zipper case.
The software included, which has OCR for
converting scanned images into text, is Windows-only, so I wasn’t able
to try that out on my Mac. For Mac users, the scanner simply shows up as
a removable drive, and you can copy the images from it to your hard
drive. Having the OCR would be a nice bonus, but I don’t currently use
any for my flatbed scanner, either.
Also included is a slim leather zipper case. I suppose it’s better to
keep the image sensor covered when not in use, but the case is kind of
weird-looking, with a little loop that you can snap onto something. You
should probably expect to get a few “Is that a scanner in your pocket,
or…” jokes the first time you pull it out. I do wish that there was some
way to carry the USB cable in the case, too — right now it’s just an
extra thing floating around with no place to put it.
Still, it’s pretty cool to be able to scan anything (well, anything
flat) with this little wand. I’ve been testing it out on a few things:
my online bank lets me deposit checks by scanning them and uploading
them, so I don’t have to fire up the flatbed for that anymore. I’ve also
scanned some of my kids’ artwork, and I’m thinking about using Jim
Kelly’s activity book idea for some on-the-go stuff, maybe the Monster
Doodle Book.
A little doodle to try scanning.
Of course, portability still isn’t cheap.
The ScanStik retails for $159.99. PlanOn has a few others like it—
monochrome scanners, and the DocuPen X line which has Bluetooth
capabilities but runs a bit pricier. (I’m not sure where this
DocuPen RC850 fits in – it’s older, but similarly priced and seems
to have similar specs.) It is a little cheaper than the Doxie Go, but
since you move the scanner yourself instead of having the paper fed
through it, it can be a little fiddlier. It is, however, incredibly
lightweight (about 2 ounces) and quite portable.
It may take a little practice to perfect the scanning technique. For
one, larger sheets which won’t shift as much may be easier than smaller
ones. I tried scanning my little robot doodle (which is on a bit of
cardstock), and you can see from the side-by-side scans below that there
are a few bits here and there that got distorted:
Two scans of a doodle show slight discrepancies.
The blue robot’s antenna and the corner
of its head, for instance, got a little tweaked, probably since it was
close to the top edge of the scan and I may have tipped it a bit going
over the cardstock’s edge. I haven’t seen similar issues with scanning
full pages yet, and so far I’ve only tripped the “too fast” indicator
once.
My one other gripe about the ScanStik is that the auto-shut-off is a
little too quick. If you’re scanning multiple pages, you better have
them lined up and ready to go, because you’ll have to turn the device
back on if you wait too long. That requires pushing and holding the
power button for a second, so doing that multiple times in a row can get
to be a pain. I’m sure it’s meant to conserve battery power, but I wish
it would wait just a little bit longer.
PlanOn has several other portable-office gadgets as well: the
PrintStik is a portable printer, and the credit card–sized
SlimScan looks pretty slick, too. For more info,
visit their website.
Wired: Full-page, full-color scanning that is extremely portable and
quite speedy.
Tired: OCR software for Windows only; wiggling too much can distort
scans.

SPIN MAGAZINE HONORS THE GREAT KAT WITH A STAR IN THE "GUITAR HERO GALAXY"!
"THE LOUDER THE BETTER - INTERSTELLAR OVERDRIVE"
-David Marchese, Spin Magazine(Full Article in May/June 2012 Issue)
From rock legends and fictional six-stringers to retail wannabes and the Devil - with callouts to and riffs from today's hottest players-our highly subjective classification of the guitar-hero galaxy!
No two guitarists are alike. That's why we've customized a star for each player in our infographic. Musicians were scored from 1-10 (1 being good, 10 being godlike) using five criteria: shreditude, volume, emotion, originality, and technique. The length of each point in the star corresponds to the player's score in each criteria. The stars are also colored according to scores, e.g., score best for volume, get a red star. If a player scored equally well among multiple attributes, we assigned a color based on the one that we felt was key. Now start stargazing!

on the market - iShower leaves the others all wet.
"What makes it different is it’s not a radio" says Maya
Tinajero, from the company that makes iShower. "It’s a
bluetooth enabled speaker, so you can stream audio from
any bluetooth capable device like your phone your
computer, iPad. Anything that has bluetooth connection."
A couple of buttons connects your device to the
wall-mounted waterproof iShower. And it’s more than just
a tiny speaker. "The sound is located on the back so
what happens is the sound reverberates off your shower
walls to maximize the quality of the sound without using
too much power."
Maya Tinajero
The
result is a full, bass rich sound that comes close to
what you’d hear with a regular stereo. "It has a 200
foot range so whatever you’re streaming from you can
actually leave it in a separate room. Not have to bring
it into the bathroom with you and risk water damage
occurring to your phone or iPad whatever it is you’re
streaming from."
It connects with up to 5 blue-tooth devices and controls
all of the playlists you create it attaches to your
shower with a couple of hooks, or it will hang over the
shower nozzle.
"It takes AA batteries that go into the back once it’s
in there it’ll last about 15 hours of great streaming."
The iShower is going to be available in the next few
weeks. If you want a better singing in the shower
experience, you’ll have to lather up $100.

Roll Over Beethoven: The Great Kat’s ‘Beethoven Shreds’ restyles famed composer
Phyllis Pollack Rock Music Examiner
The Great Kat, whose 34 videos have collectively received over one million hits on YouTube, has released her eleventh album. Appropriately titled “Beethoven Shreds,” a speed demon version of five revered classical tracks served up Great Kat style on guitar, with two original songs.
Dressed up in metal, the disc includes her lightening speed versions of the iconic classics Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Flight Of The Bumble Bee” Beethoven’s “5th Symphony,” Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto #3” and “The Art of the Fugue,” Paganini’s “Caprice #24.”
Two original tracks, the scream fest “Torture Techniques” and “IslamoFascists,” are also included.
Guitar World Magazine called her one of the world’s “greatest female guitarists,” and Guitar One Magazine called her one of the “top ten shredders of all time.” Gibson Lifestyle raised that, listing her as being among “eight of the world’s fastest shredders.” Guitar Player Magazine referred to her as being one of “twenty extraordinary female guitarists.”
Combining her love of all things metal with her knowledge of classical music, the album is a whirlwind look at Beethoven gone metal.
In addition to playing guitar on the album, Kat also edited, arranged and orchestrated the scores on the self-produced album.
An accomplished musician, the Great Kat graduated as a violin virtuoso the prestigious Juilliard School of music. She had started playing piano at the age of seven, and violin at nine. Kat, who won the “Robert Hufstader Scholarship” in music theory, graduated with honors.
Lacing virtuosity with speed, she calls her tracks “classical music for the twenty-first century.”
After touring and coming to a conclusion that classical music is “dead,” the New York based guitarist began transcribing violin solos to guitar, and playing them at lightening speed. Working with instruments and midi, she has recorded and put a heavy metal touch on a large range of classical works.
Born Katherine Tomas in Swindon, England, in a U.S. Air Force military hospital, she moved to the U.S. at age three.
Also shredding Beethoven pieces to death with her Gibson Flying V, her Beethoven’s “Guitar Shred” DVD is featured on the official website for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.
“Beethoven Shreds” also features two tracks with harpsichord. In addition to guitar, she can also be heard playing violin on the disc.
Kat has tirelessly transcribed scores of classical pieces, and uploaded video of herself, playing them, along with the related guitar tabs. She also programs these scores into her music-notation software.
States Kat, “I’ve proven that women can not only be guitar virtuoso, but a virtuoso with two instruments.”

Built-in

Guaranteed to offer at least three months battery life without a power

Charges three days' worth of reading per hour
Backup battery offers three weeks' reading
Solar gizmo also has LED light
By Rob Waugh
3 April 2012
A new solar Kindle case lets readers 'top up' their
gadget simply by leaving it in the sun - and could mean holidaymakers no
longer have to bother bringing a cable.
The case has a built-in solar panel and battery - and the battery is
guaranteed to provide three months of reading time in 'normal' sunlight,
without dipping into the Kindle's own power.
The gadget goes
on sale this week, priced at $80/£50.
The SolarKindle case charges a spare battery for Kindle directly from
the sun and costs $80/£50
Once the gadget's topped up, the SolarKindle diverts power to a backup
battery - eight hours will fully charge the backup , which offers
roughly three weeks' use. The battery also powers an LED light
Once the
gadget's topped up, the SolarKindle diverts power to a backup battery.
Eight hours
will fully charge the backup , which offers roughly three weeks' use.
The battery also powers an LED light, which can run for 50 hours.
Given that Kindle is built for wireless use, with books and gadgets
delivered to the gizmo via wi-fi or cellular networks, it's likely many
SolarKindle-equipped e-readers may never be plugged in at all.
The leather-clad pouch with charger panel and battery comes at quite a
premium, though - it's $80, only $30 short of the price of Kindle
itself.
SolarKindle
Lighted Covers are the first solar book covers for Amazon Kindle
e-readers. The Solarfocus covers can hold a charge for up to 50 hours of
use and come with a built-in LED reading light
The gadget also
offers a built-in LED light, powered by the reserve battery.
'Expose the solar panel to sunlight and your Kindle will be constantly
charging,' says SolarFocus.
If your Kindle is running down and there's no sign of the sun, you can
switch the gadget to 'top up' from the reserve battery. A blinking LED
light tells you how much battery is left in the reserve as you charge.
'After fully charging the Kindle, the solar panel automatically switches
to charge the reserve battery. When charging, the LED indicator light
blinks green. A one hour charge in direct sunlight can provide almost
three days worth of reading time on your Kindle.'
'For optimum performance, use the solar panel to continuously charge
your Kindle – don’t wait for the battery to run out of power before
recharging.'

In many ways, today's road
warriors have it easy. There are more amazing gadgets to get business
done while on the go than the businessperson of yesteryear could ever
have even imagined. Of course, the ability to be so terribly productive
can be viewed as both a blessing and a curse (but that's another story).
We've rounded up seven cutting-edge business travel gadgets to ensure
your wardrobe, computer work, meetings, and presentations rank tops
while you're traveling for work.
5. SlimScan Portable
Scanner
Why We Like It: This credit card-size scanner makes managing receipts on
the road much easier. In addition to tracking your expenses, you can
also use it to scan pictures, business cards, and articles—and save them
each into special directories. The included software recognizes category
types, allows you to edit and compartmentalize what you've scanned, and
helps you create reports. It works with eight different languages, and
comes with a case, lens brush, and PC connection cord, to boot.
Gadgetreview.com on
PlanOn SlimScan by Marshal Rosenthal 4 1/2 out of 5 Stars! “For $139
retail, you’re getting a pretty sophisticated little scanner — 300
dpi resolution and 24 bit color is nothing to sneeze at for text as
well as for color graphics.”
Sometimes technology just makes sense — traveling great distances was
possible before airplanes came along, but only through flight could the
time spent be compacted. So it’s not just about something you can use,
but something that makes sense to you. For example, a waterproof watch
is great to have if you’re always walking through the rain, but living
in the desert, not so much.
But show me someone who doesn’t have a few grocery or gas receipts,
somebody’s business card or a paid slip for some gizmo at the dollar
store in their back pocket or purse and I’ll show you a consumer who
isn’t doing their part to spend us out of this recession. OK, maybe
that’s a bit harsh but if you’re like me, by the end of the week your
pocket looks more like the invoice box of a Target store. If only there
was a way to copy these slips of paper right then and there, “on the
fly” as it were, so that it didn’t matter if they got all smushed up or
the ink ran or they got lost even. Oh I guess there is. And it’s one
thing that I don’t mind carrying in my wallet because it puts all the
credit cards there to shame.
The SlimScan SS100 (I’ll
call it the SlimScan moving forward) fits in a credit card sized slit in
a wallet or can be tossed in a pocket or backpack or purse. The only
real thing to remember is that the protective plate covering the sensor
section at its bottom has to be removed before use. Well, duh! It comes
off quick but since it has side mounted tabs, you should take your time
in order to line it up properly before pushing it up against the sensor.
Even with the plate attached, the weight of the SlimScan is negligible.
To use the SlimScan, the most important thing is to have it facing you
with the mini-LCD panel on the left. Of course you’ve already plugged it
into a USB socket from a computer or otherwise for about an hour earlier
so it can charge up, right? Me, I always end up with bank slips that are
unreadable — thanks to my putting them into a back pocket and forgetting
to remove them until the pants are to be washed — sometimes they go
through the cycle so you know what condition they’ve ended up in. Using
SlimScan, I can just make a copy of the bank slip moments after it has
been spit out of the ATM. Here’s what I do — go ahead and time me.
I put the bank slip on a flat surface and pop off the plate covering the
SlimScan’s scanner end. A long press of the center tab of the vertical
three to power it on. Using the tabs above the center one and the two
horizontal tabs above the LCD panel, I select Scan from the onscreen
menu and press the center tab lightly to bring up the folder menus to
select a folder to save the scan in — in this case “Expense” (other
choices could have been “Pictures” or “Biz-Cards” or “Articles” or
“General”). Placing the scanner end of the SlimScan against the end of
the paper closest to me, I push down and run the scanner away from me. I
can see a light coming from the SlimScan’s end so I know it’s working.
Once I reach the far end, I lift the SlimScan off and let it save the
image and tell me when I can continue to do another scan. But since I’m
done, I switch to “View” and look at what’s been captured just to be
sure. It’s fine and I notice in the menus that I could have zoomed in to
fill the entire LCD screen with the image or panned around if necessary.
So now I just press and hold in the center tab to turn it off, put the
plate back on and stow the guy away.
Now you want to transfer what’s been scanned to your computer for
storage or printing out, whatever. Better be a PC because the software
doesn’t work with Macs. And where’s the disc that the QuickStart Guide
in the package is talking about — it’s not there! Good thing I’m
intelligent enough to know to go to their website to find it. But first
I check out the “Support” area and see there’s a firmware update. So I
download it and install it — obviously the SlimScan’s already attached
via USB.
Turns out the RMS management program is inside the scanner so you can
access it once the SlimScan’s connected to the PC. The software lets you
access and control what’s been scanned — organizing and categorizing the
contents for you for use with Excel and MS Word and Outlook, etc. Or
using any saved images which are in the JPEG format. Using it is
straightforward and simple enough that a detailed description isn’t
necessary.
Editor’s Rating: 4 1/2 out of 5 Stars Excellent
Bottom line: For
$139 retail, you’re getting a pretty sophisticated little scanner — 300
dpi resolution and 24 bit color is nothing to sneeze at for text as well
as for color graphics. Plus a soft pouch, a little brush for keeping the
sensor section clean with a few flicks and a USB cable to leave at home.
Having a LCD panel menu screen may seem overkill, but the convenience it
offers for organizing the scans as well as after-scan viewing is
welcomed. Good job.
Pros
•Up to 600 scans in memory
•Preview what’s been scanned
•Software included
Cons
•PC software bundle online at additional cost
•Recessed tabs tough to access for big fingers
•Combined On/Off/Select tab can cause accidental shut down

on iBike Dash Cycling Computer by Rebecca Romero, Olympic Gold Medalist
Time to get on your iBike: Rebecca Romero reviews a
new cycling computer
By REBECCA ROMERO, Olympic gold medalist
PUBLISHED: 17:00 EST, 17 March 2012
A device that turns your iPhone into a bike computer –
gold medal winner, or false start?
I may be the only British woman to win
Olympic medals at two separate sports – rowing and cycling – but that
doesn’t mean I’m always fast with technology.
The iBike Dash is a new cycling computer
from America that has full colour graphics, touchscreen controls, and
even animation.
If it sounds complicated, don’t worry, because it’s linked to an iPhone
(or iPod Touch) and is a simple tool for any cyclist.
Once the mount is attached to the handlebar
there are a couple of cables that link to wheel and pedal sensors, which
are easy to fit.
Then you slide the casing onto the mount and you’re ready to go.
It’s waterproof and fairly robust, so your
expensive iPhone won’t be damaged in a shower – or if the worst happens
and you take a tumble.
The iBike Dash is controlled by an iPhone
app, which displays all kinds of readouts, from hill slope to elevation,
trip distance to cadence.
The app pops up as soon as you mount the iPhone on the bike.
I particularly liked the speedo because it looks like a dial from a car
dashboard. It’s very accurate, even at low speeds. If you’re using it
with an iPhone, it also shows you where you are on a map, which is
really useful if you’re on long cycle rides.
There are lots of ways to configure the screen, it’s just a case of
finding one that suits you. It wasn’t that long ago that cyclists didn’t
have computer technology to help them train.
Even in my six years of cycling – I’m now preparing for an Ironman event
in July – computer systems have developed at a very fast rate.
You have a vast amount of information at your disposal and it makes a
big difference to the way you train.
Most competitive cyclists nowadays use SRAM, a much more complicated
system that requires a new crankset and can cost up to £2,500.
The iBike is a much cheaper option but for most cyclists it will be more
than enough to improve their performance.
Even a recreational cyclist will find it useful, from looking up the
next coffee shop to checking the wind speed on the route back home.

MINTLIFE FEATURES THE GREAT KAT IN "A SHOCKING TALENT"
MintStyle: What Your Business Style Says About You
A Shocking Talent
The Great Kat is a larger than life Juilliard trained classical violinist turned guitar shredder (extremely fast guitarist in the heavy metal style). In other words she takes her knowledge of the great works of Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart and processes them through a heavy metal music filter to “single-handedly resurrect classical music.”
As for her own personal style, Kat describes her “shred-metal style” which includes, “exaggerated, outrageous metal outfits, leather garb, and insane imagery designed specifically to get attention and wake up the masses to the genius and complexity of Beethoven, Paganini, Liszt, and more.” As a style influence, Kat references violin virtuoso Niccolo Paganini who “dressed in all black and encouraged people to think that he was possessed by the devil to be able to perform such supernatural displays of technique.”
What she does: Kat’s extreme talent and classical training allows her to create an outrageous persona that supports both her professional message and motivation.
What you can do: Let your professional style take flight. If you’re secure in your talents, background, and training, you can work toward adding more creativity to the mix.
Two of my favorite apps that turn the
iPad into an easel are $2.99 ArtRage...
ArtRage offers 11 different tools,
including oil paints (represented by paint tubes), pastels, and even a
palate-knife tool that blends colors on the screen. The marks that one's
stylus makes on the iPad screen adjust differently with each tool. When
colors are added to the canvas, they blend like in real life, so oil
strokes of pink and pale blue make a light purple shade. Images can be
saved to a gallery, uploaded to Dropbox and Facebook, printed or
emailed.
Frank Tobe, The
Robot Report in NY Times by Christopher Drew!
Frank Tobe, an
independent analyst who publishes the Robot Report online, said that
until Ava was equipped to pick up and handle objects, the robot would
have limited uses. But he said the partnership with InTouch gave iRobot
a much-needed toehold in health care. iRobot plans to invest $6 million
in InTouch, and Mr. Tobe said by combining their technologies, the
companies could produce devices at a much lower cost and attract more
business.

SolarKindle
covers keep your e-reader alive longer
Worried that your Kindle e-reader will run out of
juice before you manage to finish reading the latest bestseller? You could
certainly reach for a power cord and charge the gadget's battery the
old-fashioned way — that'd solve your problem. Or you could try an
eco-friendly solution — a solar-powered cover.
The SolarKindle
has a solar panel which will siphon the power of the sun to keep the
cover's built-in reserve battery charged up. And that reserve battery
will in turn keep your Kindle alive longer.
According to
SolarFocus,
the maker of the SolarKindle covers, a fully charged reserve battery
could provide "up to 80 percent of backup power to the Kindle." The
company explains that given that the battery takes eight hours of direct
sunlight to charge, this means that each hour of charging gives you
almost three days of Kindle use. (Of course you'll get less reading time
if you use the SolarKindle's built-in pop-up reading light.)
The SolarKindle
will set you back $80 and can be ordered now.

The
Industrial Robot Revolution
Stand-alone and embedded industrial robots are
taking their place alongside humans
By Sandra Gittlen, Network World
February 20, 2012 06:09 AM ET
Frank Tobe, owner and publisher of
"The Robot Report" has observed growing interest
in robotics around the globe and across vertical
markets. "Robots appeal to an array of businesses,
including agricultural, packaging and distribution,
and medical," he says.
He believes a dramatic shift in how robots are made
and perceived has sparked their broad acceptance.
"People used to think of robots as expensive,
monstrous, dangerous, clunky machines that had to
have a cage around them. Today's robots are nothing
like that - they are cheaper, lighter, agile, and
equipped with sensors to make them safer so they can
work alongside humans," he says.
For instance, robots now handle accuracy-dependent
tasks such as polishing and sanding on consumer
device assembly lines and automatically fill orders
at fast-food chains.
"Some are even embedded into other form factors such
as automobiles so they are essentially transparent."
He points to the robotics used to power self-park
features in newer cars as an example.
As robots themselves evolve, so do their
controllers. Tobe predicts that tablets, smartphones
and other handhelds will become a common mechanism
for training and manipulating robots.
He also believes that although nowadays robotics
technology is incredibly proprietary, it will soon
open up. "As the marketplace broadens, robotic
operating systems will become more open source and
more capable," Tobe says.

Classical music performed in a metal style at blinding speeds." -
About.com Guitar
"The Great Kat presents 'Beethoven
Shreds'. This is definitely my favorite classical speed metal record of
the year." - IGN
"'The Great Kat.' She does not just play
Beethoven. If you believe her, she is Beethoven reincarnated. Loud,
blistering fast guitar riffs accompanied by screams, and an aggressive
hyper-dominatrix persona. She is direct and flamboyant about her
intentions. Her virtuosity is for real." -"Beethoven in America" Book

VELOCOMP INTRODUCES
IBIKE POWERHOUSE FOR IPHONE/IPOD TOUCH AT CES --
World’s First
Intelligent Cycling Computer that Automatically Adjusts
to Your Exercise Goals
Featuring Fitness Plans
“iSlim,” “Kid Fit,” “Brazilian Butt,” & More
Designed by Hunter
Allen, the Foremost Power-Cycling Coach in the World
January 3, 2012 – Boca
Raton, FL – Velocomp
www.ibikesports.com, a leading sports technology
company and creator of the iBike Dash CC Cycling
Computer, introduced today iBike®
POWERHOUSETM, the world’s first intelligent
cycling computer that automatically adjusts
to your exercise goals.
Based on periodic assessments of your fitness
improvements, the revolutionary iBike POWERHOUSE works
with your iPhone and iPod touch tomeasure,
guide and motivateyou to achieve important
health, appearance, and fitness goals. The POWERHOUSE
method maximizes the benefit of each ride and shortens
the time needed to achieve results.
To be introduced on January
10th at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES
2012) in Las Vegas, NV, Booth #3430, iBike POWERHOUSE
combines iBike’s patented power measurement and analysis
technologies with automatically-adjusting, goal-oriented
cycling plans -- all delivered through the incredible
display and computing power of the iPhone/iPod touch.
Choose Your Goal-Based
Plan – iBike POWERHOUSE Guides You Step-by-Step
Working out with iBike
POWERHOUSE is easy. Select a goal-based plan, from
“iSlim,” “Express Fitness,” “Brazilian Butt,” “Kid Fit,”
“Weekend Warrior,” “Zero to 50 miles in 3 weeks,” and
“Healthy Heart” -- just some of the plans available
through in-app purchases. Then, over a period of 4-6
weeks, iBike POWERHOUSE guides you through a series of
45-90 minute bike rides. During each ride, you are
directed to pedal at specific levels of effort (power),
customized to the plan’s goals and your measured fitness
level. So, a “couch potato” will start out at a
challenging but lower level of effort, whereas a fitter
cyclist will start the same plan at a significantly
higher level of effort.
Fitness Plans Designed
by Power-Cycling Coach Hunter Allen
iBike POWERHOUSE’s fitness
plans are designed by Hunter Allen, the world’s
foremost power-cycling coach. Allen’s plans have been
proven over nearly 20 years of coaching cyclists at all
levels -- from beginner to world class. And, in
addition to the structured ride information for each
plan, videos are included with tips from Allen
for getting the most out of your cycling.
iBike POWERHOUSE is a
complete system, including:
·A water/shock
resistant case for the iPhone/iPod touch.
·Patented electronics
that perform all cycling measurements, including power.
·An app that
interacts with iBike’s electronics.

speed/cadence sensor.
·Universal mounting
system.

to your fitness level and goals, and that automatically
adjusts as you improve”, said John Hamann, CEO,
Velocomp. “iBike POWERHOUSE is a must for anyone
who owns a bike and who wants to achieve measurable
improvement towards health and fitness goals.”
Priced at $279 MSRP, iBike
POWERHOUSE includes the case, electronics, POWERHOUSE
app, speed/cadence sensor, iSlim Plan, and mounting
