Want to heat up your grill game? Well, we tested out a must-have thermometer for your summer weekend BBQs.

The iDevice Kitchen Thermometer ($80, idevicesinc.com) uses Bluetooth technology combined with a helpful app that not only allows you to monitor your meal without lifting the grills hood and compromising the cooking temperature, but also lets you wander away and enjoy the party with your guests!

So how does it work?

The kitchen thermometer comes with two prongs that you insert into your meateither into two different cuts or, like we did, one into your meal and one to measure the ambient temperature. Next, you download the free app to your smartphone and set your alerts. The app comes loaded with pre-set temperature ranges so novices can cook their meat completely and safely, but also allows you to customize your own alerts.

The app alerts youlike a trusted sous chefwhen the ideal internal temperature is reached and, voilŕ, dinner is served!

Theres also a handy social media integration feature on the app which allows you to share your like-worthy cooking prowess to Facebook.

But lest we rely on nifty-sounding bells and whistles alone, we put the iDevice Kitchen Thermometer to the test: smoking a brisket.

The all-day process of smoking a brisket is notoriously difficult. One of the keys to a mouthwatering, butter-soft brisket is a steady cooking temperature. With the iDevice Kitchen Thermometer, we were able to set our temperature range and walk away, letting our iPhone monitor the progress for us. No more lifting the lid to constantly check the briskets progressespecially in the last hour or so to make sure it doesnt overcook!and exposing the meat to a gush of cooler air.

Better yet, we were free to mingle and clink glasses with our backyard guests while the smoker worked its magic.

The results? A delicious BBQ and a very happy, un-frazzled chef.

Bluetooth speakers haven't flooded the market they've drowned it, crowding physical store shelves and online outlets with a seemingly endless supply of devices, most from little-known brands. Take Soundmatters, for example, and its inexplicably named FoxL Dash 7, which doesn't have the grabby design of some competitors, but carries a premium price tag.

And yet, this has been our go-to Bluetooth speaker for months. It's remarkably thin (0.44 inches), making it easy to slide into a coat or jacket pocket while running out the door. It can fill a room with clean, clear audio while laid flat on its back, with more bass and battery life (12 hours) than expected from something so small.

But what it does better than any Bluetooth speaker we've tested is sync up correctly with audio from movies and TV shows, when paired with a tablet or laptop. With other models, there's often a slight but deal-breaking lag between on-screen video and the accompanying sound, putting lip movement just ahead of audible dialogue. The Dash 7 has never committed that sin, pumping perfectly aligned audio that, when aimed directly at your face, is also surprisingly expansive, wrapping around like the left and rear-channel components of a surround-sound system. Bottom line: It's a wonderfully rich speaker that's up for any task, whether you're listening to Matthew McConaughey's morose ramblings on True Detective or lounging on some sandy, sun-speckled beach. Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday are behind us, so I guess the 2013 holiday shopping season is in full gear. If you made it through the opening weekend with any money left, and youre still in search of great gift ideas, here are four gadgets or devices to consider buying for your more active or athletic friends or family.
SensoGlove Golf is a very popular sport. It is an exercise in sadomasochism that can be quite fun and relaxing if you do it right. Thats where the SensoGlove may be able to help. Many amateur golfers have a natural tendency to want to swing a golf club like its a vertical baseball batgripping the club as if theyre trying to choke the life out of it and swinging with maximum force as if theyre trying to ring the bell at one of those carnival games. The reality is that proper form yields significantly better results than brute force. You want to hold the club firmly enough to maintain control and not have it fly out of your hands and go farther down the fairway than your golfball. But, you also want a grip that is not too tense. You have to find a balance between gripping the club lightly, but tightly enough at the same time. The SensoGlove is a soft cabretta leather golf glove with sensors in the fingertips and a small computer that clips to the glove on the back of your hand. The sensors detect how firmly youre gripping the club, and the computer provides both visual and audible feedback to let you know if youre gripping the club too tightly. The computer operates on CR1620 watch style batteries which you can easily replace. If you wear the actual glove out, you can purchase a replacement glove from SensoGlove, and just snap the computer module onto it. The SensoGlove costs $89 on the website, and replacement gloves without the computer cost $22.48. Golf-X-Cube The next gift idea continues to golfing theme, but its less of a gadget than the other items on this list. The Golf-X-Cube is literally just a block of green plastic. There arent any computers or electronics involved at all. The concept behind the Golf-X-Cube is ingenious in its simplicity. The Golf-X-Cube is dark green on the very top, while the rest of it is a lighter yellow-green. To use it, you simply place it on the ground in front of you while you are practicing. Just as with the golf grip, the goal of the golf swing is to execute proper form, not swing with every muscle and beat the ball as hard as you can. Its important to rotate your torso, and shift your weight properly for the correct golf swing, and the Golf-X-Cube helps you achieve that motion. When youre in the proper position over the Golf-X-Cube, all you can see is the dark green top. The goal is to maintain that position throughout the swing motion. If you sway back or forward during the swing rather than rotating properly, the lighter green plastic will become visible. The Golf-X-Cube is small enough to toss in your bag and take with you to the driving range, or try it out on a golf course if you like. It costs $33.95 and comes with a DVD that walks you through proper swing technique and how to use the Golf-X-Cube effectively.

Reviews In 2011 we reviewed the foxL v2.2 Bluetooth speaker from Soundmatters, declaring it definitely something special, saying its audio quality was nothing short of astounding for a hand-sized unit and giving it a score of 4.5 mice.

Then in 2012 we followed that up with a review of the Platinum edition, which took its quality a step further. That time it scored a perfect 5 mice. Both times we awarded it an Editors Pick.

Now its late 2013 and, after a number of delays, the foxL DASH7 is available in Australia. Its similar to the v2 Series speakers in many aspects, but differs from them in one big way its flat where the others are chunky.

The DASH7 is 5.3cm wide, 19cm long and 1.8cm thick, which makes it a bit narrower than an iPhone 5, 50 percent longer and twice as thick.

It has a black front grille and back, with a side band in white, black or red. To the right side of the grille are two volume buttons and another for power and Bluetooth control.

Behind the grille are two speakers and a BassBattery, which is the same configuration as the V2 Series.

The former are Twoofers tweeters that also woof that deliver 2W of power when powered by the rechargeable battery or USB, and 4W when plugged into mains power via the 5V Power In jack.

The BassBattery is a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery combined with an acoustic bass radiator an unpowered panel which extends the bass by resonating at a frequency lower than the active Twoofers.

Put together, they produce a sound that belies the DASH7′s size and is just as amazing as that of the V2 range. Its rich and detailed with a beautiful balance across the tonal range.

Its best when placed relatively close to you in front of the iPad on your desk, for instance but can also sound excellent from across the room.

We gave it a long test over a couple of weeks, playing everything from Verdi, Bach and Benny Carter to Them Crooked Vultures, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Lorde and it didnt disappoint us once.

Theres a good amount of bass evident, but more is easily available by hooking up Soundmatters $219 foxLO subwoofer to the DASH7′s dedicated Sub Out jack.

The unit is designed to be omnidirectional when resting flat, and to provide a more targeted sound when standing up against the included case/stand.

Rounding out the package are a 3.5mm audio-in jack, a noise-cancelling microphone that lets you use the speaker as a handsfree unit for phone calls, and a set of four wall power plugs for use in different countries.

Bottom line.

Almost all small Bluetooth speakers lack something definition, bass, balance, power, etc but there are no compromises you have to make with the foxL DASH7. Its one of those Wow! products that never fails to put a smile on your face, and we have no hesitation in giving Soundmatters another perfect score and an Editors Pick.

WARM AND FUZZY Because the Dash7 (shown in front of an iPad) is just ž-of-an-inch thick, it can sit in front of the screen without obstructing the view.

FRONT AND CENTER: Traditionally, thats where you need to sit in relation to an audio speaker for it to sound the fullest. But two new modelswhich coax soundwaves to splay out to the left and right, as well as centermanage to envelop a room without overwhelming it.

Take, for instance, the foxL Dash7 (). You can think of this 7˝-inch device as a soundbar for a tablet computer. Like a traditional television soundbar, the Dash7 is designed to span the width of a screenin this case, that of an iPad or similar-size tablet. But unlike the most portable speakers, the Dash7 measures only ž inches deep. You can place it flat on a table, face up, in front of a propped-up tablet, and it will leave the image unobstructed. Yes, this leaves the Dash7 pointing toward the ceiling. But thats not an issue, because the speaker is tweaked to disperse audio at a wide angle.

Despite the Dash7′s slimness, its audio quality is a huge improvement over the feeble speakers built into most tablets. The iPad, for example, projects sound from one end of the device, making for a lopsided experience when watching videos, and even the front-mounted stereo speakers on less sonically challenged tablets are tinny and hollow. Connect the Dash7 and youll notice a much-needed boost in volume and clarity.

The Dash7 can stream audio wirelessly over Bluetooth, and in our tests using an iPad to watch video, there was no lag between the sound and image that can plague other Bluetooth speakers. We also liked that the Dash7′s surprisingly grippy feet provide enough friction to function as a makeshift tablet stand. Lean your tablet against some books, and the Dash7 will keep the device from sliding forward.

Great concept, perfection is a few OS upgrades away

In terms of first impressions, the Planon PS905 PrintStik ticks all the right boxes. Very handy miniscule size, pretty smooth design, and the fact that you dont need to refill paper thanks to an inbuilt roll. The device is touted as the smallest mobile printer, handy to printout a missing Air Ticket, or a few random notes you typed in the night before. The portability element apart, definite highlights include minimal moving parts for printing and the thermal ink factor, meaning cost efficiency.

Installing the device was a synch, and soon enough we were printing a page. Interestingly, the paper roll is installed inside the device, meaning its just a question of attaching your device to the laptop and pressing Ctrl P. The paper prints at a decent speed, the spec sheet claims up to 3 pages per minute, it comes out in one of those thermal papers that you get at your ATM. Interestingly enough, it doesnt take in double spaces, meaning even if you type just 4 lines across an entire A4, the 4 get compressed and print. Pretty smart, that bit. Once the print is done, you merely tear out the paper.

The fact that you have to purchase the preloaded paper cartridge @ USD 29.99 for a set of 3 might seem an indulgence, but the thermal printing makes up for it in cost. Now, on to the not so great side Lets assume lack of support for USB 3.0 is okay, but this device doesnt support Windows 7, Windows 8 or Android. Huge downers, those.

Still, with OS Support updated, this could well be in every techies must-have list. The brand is constantly getting in the first ever category [they recently launched the worlds smallest full page color scanner, which can scans with voice recordings to mobile devices], so we could expect an upgrade soon enough.

Painting is fun. Unfortunately, software for painting often gets a bad rep: I don't mean image-editing (Photoshop), but actual painting (Microsoft Paint). But Microsoft Paint is at the very bottom of the painting totem pole, often associated squiggly-looking Rage Guy memes. More modern tools like SpeedyPainter and Corel Painter Lite show that creating beautiful, natural-looking art using a computer is possible, and doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. ArtRage joins these accessible tools with its own touch-friendly interface and an attractive $50 price tag. The Symmetry feature makes for interesting paintings that sometimes look like koalas.
Much like Corel Painter Lite and its older sibling, Corel Painter, ArtRage simulates natural media. Paper and brush both have textures; load your brush with paint and draw it across the canvas with one long stroke, and it will gradually fade out. Paint over an area again, and colors will blend, leaving visible brush strokes. ArtRage's interface is simple to pick up, with most functions in easy reach. I tested it with a simple stylus and one of the new breed of touchscreen-enabled laptops, the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13. Radial toolbars at the bottom two corners of the screen let me quickly switch tools and adjust colors without fiddling with menus. Other tools show up as floating panels, which are easy to drag and resize using large, comfortable grippers, and automatically wink out of existence as you paint near them. You can pan, zoom, and rotate the canvas with two fingers, making for a very natural workflow. While most of the interface is touch-friendly, it's not all quite there yet: Adjusting layer opacity still requires the keyboard, for example. Stencils and rulers make it easy to constrain your work.
Once you get used to the friendly interface and simple tools, it's time to start playing around with some of the more creative features. Symmetry makes it possible to create interesting, kaleidoscope-like drawings, while stencils and rulers let you constrict your work in interesting ways, for a more accurate, geometric look. Stencils and rulers are made to look like physical objects lying on top of your canvas: You can drag them around and resize them, but they look like pieces of plastic or metal. ArtRage supports layers, too, and you can blur individual layers, adjust their blend modes, change their textures, and more. When zooming in for detail work, it often helps to keep the big picture in mind. When watching videos made with SpeedyPainter, I noticed just how often artists would zoom in and out, again and again, to get a sense of how the work is progressing. ArtRage helps avoid this by offering a feature called Views. A View works like a little Polaroid snap of your painting that lies on top of your canvas while you zoom in to work on the details. Just like a physical Polaroid, you can drag the View around and rotate it. Unlike its real-world counterpart, you can also change a View's size, and zoom in or out on its contents. The same concept is used to show pieces of scrap canvas or other files for reference. Polaroid-like Views of your work keep the big picture in view while zooming in for detail work. ArtRage feels deep and capable, but remains accessible and easy to start with. The attractive price tag doesn't hurt, either. Like most other painting software, it is usable with a mouse, but shines when used with a pen tablet or a touchscreen. As Fathers Day approaches, I receive a Press Release from my favorite PR agent Karen Thomas whose firm bearing her name is the top PR firm for Consumer Technology products. This is immediately followed by the delivery of a couple of sample products for review.

I find the two technology products interesting for they cater to different generations one for Dads and the other for Kids or Grandkids. Both qualify as great gifts on Fathers Day.
