Holiday Gift Ideas For The Tech-Savvy!
By
Adam Balkin, NY1 TV
If you're searching for that perfect holiday gift, you may want
to tap into your inner geek. NY1's Adam Balkin filed the
following report.
For the golfer in your life, a teched-out
glove could help improve their swing this off-season. Developers
of the SensoGlove say there's a mini-computer built in to take
readings of the sensors placed throughout the glove to teach
proper grip. It tells you via a visual and audio cue when you're
gripping too tightly whether during address or at any point
during the swing, including which single finger may be the
culprit. At just around $100 it can be adjusted to accommodate
your particular swing.

ALIBRE DESIGN EXPERT NOW INCLUDES
“MOMENT OF INSPIRATION” SOFTWARE
Provides Optimal Speed & Ergonomic Design for Consumer
Product Creation
Lets You Quickly Capture Your Idea & Get it on the
Screen
Richardson, TX, December 7, 2010 –Alibre Inc.
www.alibre.com, today announced the inclusion of the
simple, yet powerful rapid concept creation and
surfacing design tool, Moment of InspirationTM
(MoI), in Alibre Design Expert. Created by Michael
Gibson, the original designer of the Rhino modeling
tool, MoI makes product and concept design easy,
fast, and accessible to more designers.
Alibre’s inclusion of MoI into Alibre Design Expert
means that customers have the ability to more easily
create consumer product designs and also brings
uncompromising speed to the concept design phase.
“Adding MoI opens up many new doors and opportunities
for our customers to create new classes of products,”
said J. Paul Grayson, CEO, Alibre. “When you look around
you, many of the things that people touch or use on a
daily basis have an aspect of ergonomics and visual
richness. Optimal design of consumer-oriented
products benefits greatly from the additional tools
which MoI brings to the table.”
“It’s called Moment of Inspiration because the second
you have your moment, your great idea, you want to
capture it and get it on the screen in front of you and
then build on the momentum of your creative process. MoI
is simply the fastest and easiest way to do this on the
market today,” said Max Freeman, VP Marketing, Alibre.
“MoI is for product designers what SketchUp is for
architects.”
Opens Alibre Market to Rendering & Game Development
The combination of Alibre Design Expert and MoI also
provides a gateway for other 3D CAD programs, such as
Solidworks, Inventor, and Pro/E, enabling their
native CAD models to be brought into Blender,
SketchUp, Maya and any other rendering or game
development platform that supports OBJ files.
SketchUp output (SKP) is also supported. Traditional
mesh-based modelers have their place, but often you can
design mechanical-looking components of a scene
substantially faster in a 3D CAD system.
For additional MoI product information, please see
www.alibre.com/products/moi-for-alibre.asp.
MoI is included in Alibre Design Expert, the
flagship design suite from Alibre, priced at $1399
and available at:
www.alibre.com/store. Alibre Design is also
available priced at $99 for Alibre Design 2011
Personal Edition (PE) and $699 for Alibre Design 2011
Professional. For a free trial or for more
information, please visit

News Features SensoGlove “What to get a Live Sound
Guy for the Holidays”
-
- What do live sound guys want? We ask this
question every year and of course, the best
answers are intangible: More sleep, a little
respect, and a living wage. None of those fit in
a stocking, however, so here’s our fourth annual
gift guide on what to get your favorite live
sound pro for the holidays.
To compile this list, we looked for items that
would be good for audio pros working local gigs
or cranking it out on a 22-bus national tour.
Everything had to be small enough to fit in a
road case without using a sledge hammer to make
it fit, and most importantly, it had to be
useful—except for the goofball stuff that was
too good to resist.
-
- • SensoGlove: If there’s
two things tour engineers love, it’s analytic
data and golf. Combining them both is this
digital golf glove, whose sensors read the
user’s grip pressure to analyze and hopefully
improve one’s golf swing. $89.

Mac|Life’s Guide to
Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals
Posted 11/24/2010 at 12:03pm | by J.R. Bookwalter
That collective inhale you heard this week was the
breath of thousands of U.S. retailers preparing for
Friday, November 26 -- better known to shoppers as Black
Friday. Here’s how to make the best of the day, as well
as its online equivalent, Cyber Monday, on November 29.
Most everyone knows that Black Friday is the day that
many retailers count on to get over the profit hump for
the year as the calendar slides into the holiday season.
Each year the deals get crazier and the crowds get
bloodthirsty for deals. This year, many companies have
gotten a jump on the post-Thanksgiving specials early,
which will extend through “Cyber Monday” on November 29
and in many cases, beyond.
Here’s a peek at the MacLife.com-approved Black Friday
deals that have piqued our interest, and where to go
online to find them -- that’s right, no changing out of
your jammies or braving an unruly mob to get these
offers. That’s just how we roll.
Other World Computing (OWC) is launching a huge sale
on Wednesday, November 24 in honor of Black Friday and
Cyber Monday, which includes 90 percent off select
NewerTech protective cases and accessories for your

MAKE YOUR OWN ROBOT FOR THE
HOLIDAYS WITH ALIBRE
Kids & Adults Create Robots with Alibre
DIY 3D Design at Home, School, & Work:
·
Robot that Walks &
Sees
·
GPS Unmanned Robot
Vehicle
·
Artistic Robot
Dallas, TX,
November 18, 2010 -
Alibre, Inc.
www.alibre.com, the award-winning developer of the
world’s most affordable professional 3D design
software, announced today that Alibre Design 3D lets you
create your own robots for the holidays.
The perfect holiday gift for anyone that loves
science and creating robots, inventions, and gadgets,
the award-winning Alibre Design was used by kids and
adults to create one-of-a-kind robots, including
“Stance” the walking robot, the “Skunksworks Lab” GPS
controlled unmanned vehicle robot, and “SADBot,” the
drawing robot
that creates art according to the season and weather.
“Stance,”
the Biped Rebot that Walks & Sees
“Stance,”
is a biped walking robot with a smooth human-like
gait, created using Alibre Design, by Josh
Sanderson, President of JGS Technical. “Stance” walks
through remote control and “sees” through a
high-definition video camera. Unlike most
hobbyist robots that have a spasmodic and abrupt walk,
the “Stance” robot walks smoother, with more realistic
motion. Sanderson found it is easy to build a
customized robot using Alibre. Once the basics of
his design were created in 3D with Alibre, Sanderson
tweaked it with the information he got from his study of
walking, and added custom parts created in Alibre.
Alibre Design’s parametric controls allowed him to
exactly adjust sizes and positions of parts during his
experiments.
Do It
Yourself Robot at Home
Anyone can
create a robot like “Stance, which was made using Alibre
Design with the basic building blocks of a small motor,
servo, and mounting bracket from the hobbyist dealer,
Lynxmotion’s Servo Erector Set. Lynxmotion provides
3D part models in Alibre’s format, so designers can
choose to configure the components in many different
ways. “If I need to make custom parts, it’s simpler to
do the fitting on the 3D model with Alibre. All
the accurate measurements are right there,” Sanderson
explains. “I can adjust each of the parameters and
have the models react immediately. Alibre Design
is a high-level parametric modeler, which makes it ideal
for prototypes.”
Students
Create Award-Winning Unmanned Vehicle Robot
Students from
the Southern Methodist University (SMU) “SkunkWorks
Lab” created a GPS controlled
unmanned vehicle robot activated via a cell phone
interface. Under the supervision of Nathan
Huntoon, Director of the Innovation Gymnasium, SMU,
the SkunkWorks Lab used Alibre to design all the parts
of their vehicle, before they even built it. “What
is amazing, is the students designed the vehicle in 3D
first and when it came time to fit all the parts
together, every piece fell in place perfectly,”
said Huntoon. The Skunkworks Lab recently displayed
their award-winning design at the TEDxSMU event in
Dallas.
Solar-Powered Artistic Robot Created for New York City
Gallery
Dustyn
Roberts, Founder of Dustyn Robots, used Alibre Design to
create
SADbot
(Seasonally Affected Drawing Robot), a solar powered,
interactive drawing robot created in partnership with
Ben Leduc-Mills for the Eyebeam Window Gallery in New
York City. Roberts and Leduc-Mills used two 18.5”
x 13” solar panels to power two stepper motors which
controlled a pen in two dimensions.
SADbot took input from people walking outside the
gallery window by using a set of sensors which tell how
much light they’re getting (photocells). SADbot
knew if someone was covering up one of the sensors, and
could change its drawing behavior accordingly.
SADbot was also recently on display at the Maker Faire
convention for inventors and makers, held September 2010
in NY.
New Alibre
Design 2011 with Dramatic Improvements - Makes it Easier
to Create a Robot
The winner of
Maker Faire Detroit’s “Editor’s Choice” 2010 Award,
Alibre is providing exciting new ways for people to
create and design robots and gadgets in 3D. Alibre
recently announced the more powerful Alibre Design 2011
with dramatic improvements in ease-of-use, efficiency
and performance. Priced thousands less than
competitors, starting at only $99 for Personal
Edition (PE), $699 for Professional, and $1399 for
Expert, new improvements and features include a full
port of the code to C# (making it the first native
64-bit version), powerful sheet metal conversion
tools, and a myriad of time saving tools and
customization features.
“Alibre
Design 2011 lets people take their vision and turn it
into a reality in record time by digitally prototyping
or printing their 3D models, enabling everyone, from
adults, kids, DIYers, inventors, tinkerers,
entrepreneurs, designers, engineers and scientists to
become entrepreneurs and set-up their own businesses in
their homes and garages,” said J. Paul Grayson, Chairman
and CEO, Alibre Inc.

NAMES THE GREAT KAT "TOP 5 FEMALE GUITARISTS"!
- By EN 440
-
- The Great Kat
She is among the 10 fastest guitarists in the world. She began as a violinist who spent years studying Classical compositions, but seeing that this instrument was not getting the attention it deserved decided to dedicate herself to playing guitar in a style she calls "Classical Shred".
She has a technique worthy of admiration due to her high accuracy and degree of perfectionism.

Portable Entertainment
Gift Ideas [2010 Cool Yule Tools]
Things that keep you entertained while you're moving
around, or out and about.
November 08, 2010 12:07 AM ET
The days of having multiple devices for listening to
music or watching movies is basically over – Apple
dominates the market so much so that it’s hard to find
interesting devices that don’t immediately compare
themselves to the iPod or the iPad. So a lot of the gear
in the portable entertainment space this year focuses on
the headphone space, where we are seeing lots of
different choices, designs and styles. Here are our
picks for favorites in the portable entertainment space:
KidzGear wired and
wireless headphones
If you have kids, chances are that at
some point during their life, you’re going to be
subjected to music or other entertainment that you just
can’t tolerate. Maybe it’s the Wiggles, or Dora the
Explorer, or something else, but eventually you’ll want
to give your child a pair of headphones so you won’t
have to listen to it. Or maybe you’re on a car trip and
want to listen to your own music (or thoughts) but still
keep the kids entertained.
KidzGear offers two types of headphones that can help.
The wired and wireless headphones are designed to fit a
child’s head better than larger-size headphones, and a
volume limiter adapter helps reduce the volume that goes
inside their heads for safer listening. You can also get
a splitter that would let two kids listen to the
audio/video source at the same time.
The wireless headphones are battery powered, and only
work with some in-car wireless DVD and a/v systems, as
well (check the Web site for compatibility issues). You
can also purchase an optional wireless transmitter that
connects to a stationary audio/video source inside the
house, such as a TV, video game console or DVD player.
My 4-year-old daughter loved having her own pair of
headphones, and never complained about the fit or the
sound quality. I preferred the wired headphones over the
wireless headphones, as the wireless had a very limited
signal range (my daughter said “The music stopped!”
after walking about 5 feet away – some line of sight
issues might be in effect), and when you were in range
there was a noticeable audio hiss in the background.
Cool Yule rating: 3 stars (wireless); 4 stars (wired).
Price: $17 for wired; $30 for wireless; in-home wireless
transmitter costs $16.

DIY HD kit gives old
laptop drives new life
by Matt Hickey
Two great tastes that taste great together!
(Credit: OWC)
Replacing hard drives in laptops isn't new, and neither
is converting old drives into external backup drives.
Yours Truly did both those things about a month ago,
taking my MacBook's stock 80GB drive, replacing it with
a 250GB drive, and then taking the old drive and adding
it to a bus-powered 2.5-inch enclosure to make a
portable 80GB HD I can take anywhere.
Other World Computing has
new kits that combine both a new drive and an external
enclosure, as well as all the tools you'll need to
do the upgrade and build the external.
What's great is the kits don't just include HDD
upgrades; OWC also gives the option of upgrading to a
high-performance SSD drive. For those with an older
MacBook (or, indeed, any 2.5-inch SATA-equipped laptop)
who are looking for a speed boost, $275 gives you a
120GB SSD, an enclosure for your stock hard drive, the
appropriate mini screwdrivers, a USB cable, and a
stylish, sophisticated (we're assuming) sleeve.
But that's not the only option; indeed the SSD kits go
all the way up to 240GB (for $570), and the standard HDD
kits top out with a 5,200rpm 1TB drive ($154), or a
faster 7,200rpm 750GB drive ($130), any of which would
make a 2-year-old laptop last a little longer.
Those are all good prices for a kit, but I'd like to
know this: Why didn't anyone think of this sooner (that
we know of)?

Senior Traveler: Travel bargains for
the holiday season
By Alan Solomon
For The Inquirer
Baseball is over, finally, even for the Phillies. That
can mean only one thing.
It's almost Christmas.
It really is almost Hanukkah. (First light: Dec. 1.)
Calls these gifts, if it makes you feel more seasonal.
Think of some of them as potential gifts to yourselves.
I think of them as incentives to get us out of town.
Tour companies, cruise lines, hotels, destinations, and
marketers of tourist-friendly toys are jumping in early,
trying to get a portion of holiday spending onto their
bottom lines. What follows are among the dozens of
alerts that got my attention.
A disclosure: Not all of these offerings are exclusive
to seniors or discounted only for 55-plussers (or, for
that matter, discounted for anyone). But I've chosen
them because they offer something that appeals to us
geezers - value, and maybe something a little different.
Grab your credit card (which we keep balance-free, of
course), and here we go:
Golf. Golf
aids are often curious, but here's one - with no stated
age limit - that offers to correct just about everything
in your game for a mere $89 (or about the price of three
nights at Excalibur): the SensoGlove. It has built-in
sensors that read your grip pressure. "Practicing with
SensoGlove will teach you the correct grip pressure for
a smooth, consistent swing that delivers greater
distance, enhanced precision and lower scores!" This is
not a personal endorsement. I haven't broken 100 since
1997. Just passing it along.

It’s Hell Getting Old! The Road to Wellness—Almost
A
Year in the Medical System with 14 Different Doctors – A
Unique Story of Hope
Rochester, NY, November 8, 2010 -- A new book focusing
on a personal view of the health-care system, It’s
Hell Getting Old! The Road to Wellness—Almost,
is written by author John Larish, a well-known writer,
broadcaster, speaker, and inventor. In 2009,
Larish spent a hellish year going through treatments for
spinal pain with 14 different doctors.
Larish was not walking well, and x-rays indicated
spinal stenosis,
with the potential of his not being able to walk at
all. Doctors first tried spinal injections, and
then turned to spinal surgery to try to give him a
chance for a normal life. There were many limitations
after surgery, but things were moving along well, until
what appeared to be a disconnection of nerves in his
right leg.
“The whole process was like climbing a high mountain
and then falling to the bottom of the valley below the
mountain. There were lessons learned, not just for the
stenosis problem, but for other medical challenges that
occurred, including the potential of multiple myeloma
being the major cause of my problems, which fortunately
was not,” said author John Larish.
Surgery, rehabilitation, along with the peaks and
valleys of health and life,
create a story of unique hope. Woven into the story is
comments from Dr. Bradford Berk, M.D., Ph.D., CEO of the
University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), who went
through a challenging spinal injury experience in an
accident and came back from it with a greater
understanding of the needs of his patients.

App Wrap: "ArtRage," By: Adam Balkin
- NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps
for your cell phone or mobile device in the
twice-weekly segment “App Wrap.” NY1’s Adam Balkin
filed the following report.
ArtRage
There a dozens of phone or iPad type apps for
children that mimic drawing, painting and doodling,
but "ArtRage" is not one of them. It is designed to
be an app that a serious or even professional artist
can pick up, with the hopes that they can find at
their disposal in the virtual studio just about
anything they would find in their real studio.
Virtually every type of drawing tool is available,
from crayons to oil paints, and each tool has its
own settings to offer every type of effect the
actual tool does.
It's also extremely realistic. For example, users
painting with oils can layer and mix colors. All the
supplies will interact with each other and the
canvas, just as they would for real. Speaking of the
canvas, even that can be changed to mimic different
canvas textures.
A nice touch for seriously inept amateurs is that
users can pop an actual photo in the app and paint
over it to create an easy masterpiece. The app can
even choose the appropriate colors to make it even
easier to make.
"ArtRage" is available for the iPad for $6.99.

Alibre Design 2011 Released
By: Sean Carroll
10.27.2010
CAD and CAM may not be the sexiest buzzwords in computer
software these days, but 3D is red hot, and, really, what is a CAD/CAM
app but a 3D design program? Alibre Design 2011 has just released, and
it offers anyone from tinkerers and DIYers to engineers and scientists
the ability to design in three dimensions, starting from just $99.
Alibre Design 2011 lets users make 2D sketches that are then converted
to 3D representations (either shaded displays or wireframes), and it's
simple to view cross-sections, too. The cross-sections themselves can be
used as the basis for new designs, which is handy if you're designing
something that will be built from multiple parts that have to fit
together. Once you've created a 3D model of your widget, you can
reconvert it back to 2D drawings, for production, too.
Alibre Design 2011 represents a considerable upgrade from previous
editions. The code has been ported to C# and the result is the app's
first native 64-bit version. Improvements are said to include a new
in-place 2D editing framework with hyper context-sensitive tools that
allow users to design without continually referring to toolbars and
dialogs.
Alibre Design is available at three price points: Personal Edition for
$99; Professional for $699; and Expert Edition for $1399.

Los
Angeles, CA, October 25, 2010 – Digital Foci,
Inc.
www.digitalfoci.com, an award-winning
leading provider of
digital photography accessories for consumers and
professional photographers, announced today that it
will be participating in the nationwide “For Love
and Art: Sharing with Seniors” (FLASS) project
by providing the popular Digital Foci “Photo
Book” portable digital photo album at
subsidized prices below cost. Each Digital
Foci Photo Book will be filled with images from
America’s leading art galleries to be donated to
seniors at hospices to enhance their quality of life.
Over 1,000
Paintings from Van Gogh, Renoir, Monet, Homer & More
The FLASS project,
organized by Mark Lombard, President of Project
Fulfillment Touching Our World Foundation, requested
the Smithsonian and other leading museums to donate
digital photos of masterpieces for this important
project. Current museums committed to participating
include The Smithsonian National Gallery of Art in
Washington DC, Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY, J.
Paul Getty Museum, Dallas Museum of Art, Art
Institute of Chicago, and Meadows Museum at SMU, The
Amon Carter Museum in Ft. Worth, Phillips Collection
in Washington, DC, and the Kimbell Art Museum.
The museums are providing over 1,000 images from van
Gogh, Renoir, Monet, Homer, and many more great
artists.
Digital Foci’s
Photo Book was chosen by Lombard as the display for
the world’s most beautiful artwork because of its
crystal clear, high-resolution 8-inch 800 x 600
digital LCD color screen and ample 4GB of internal
memory for archiving large amounts of art. In
addition, Photo Book makes it effortless for the
elderly and bed-ridden with limited motion to turn
pages by just a click of a button. It even
includes a page-turning effect like a real book.
“The choice of using Digital Foci’s Photo Book was
in conference with art museum educators,” said Mark
Lombard, Founder FLASS. “Photo Book is the
perfect way for seniors to enjoy exquisite artwork
in the comfort of their own home or hospice instead
of going out to a museum or art gallery.”
Mr. Lombard
envisioned the FLASS project after volunteering at
hospices for years. “In
the service of community, sparkling opportunities
surprisingly arise. As a hospice volunteer, I
challenged my patient, Miss Billie, to regain enough
strength in her failing limbs to allow us to visit
the city museum. Loving art as much as she did, she
gave it her best effort, yet could not surmount the
toll of her years,” said Lombard. “So, like
the mountain coming to the prophet, I began bringing
pieces of the museum — gift shop postcards, etc. —
to Miss Billie. And how she treasured them! So, I
thought, what if we bring artwork to her from around
the world, digitally, in a photo album?”
Renoir’s “Lise
in a White Shawl”
— FLASS’
Cover Girl
An example of
the art classics available digitally through FLASS
for the home-bound is Renoir’s
“Lise in a White Shaw” --
the cover girl for the FLASS project. Lise was
one of Renoir’s favorite models and they came to
love each other. This painting was their last time
together and it shows by the love and sadness etched
in Lise’s expression. “Lise in a White Shawl,”
currently on display in the Reves Collection at the
Dallas Museum of Art, is one of the hundreds of
pieces of art that seniors will be now enjoying on
Photo Book digital photo albums with the FLASS
project.

SensoGlove by Michael Berman
SensoGlove Beeps Its Way into Your
Golf Bag
Submitted by Michael L Berman on Fri, 10/22/2010 - 15:20
FORE!
No more hook!
No More slice!
No more dribbling the ball 50 feet off the tee.
German engineering has produced the SensoGlove ($89)
that prevents golfers from gripping their clubs too tightly, which,
according to many PGA professionals, is one of the main causes of bad
golf shots.
Sensors in the fingers alert a small, removeable
computer when you have your club in a death grip, resulting in a loud
beep telling you to ease up. The computer also shows you how tightly
you're gripping the club and can be adjusted to fit your personal
preferences.
It's a bit too chilly here to use the SensoGlove out on
the course, but we were able to put it through its paces on the practice
range. The result? After several annoying beeps and boops, we were able
to find the right grip, which resulted in straighter, if not longer,
shots.
You can use the high-quality, calfskin glove without the
computer or order replacement gloves for $22.48. You can also get a
Men's Value Pack, which includes a right and left-hand glove and two
computers for $132.94, in case you want to test the grip of both hands.
Check out the company's website at
www.sensoglove.com
for more information.
AMBIENT DESIGN SPONSORS INAUGURAL
iAMDA MOBILE DIGITAL ARTIST CONFERENCE
ArtRage for iPad Launch
Celebrated in New York and Worldwide with 40% App Discount During
Conference
October 22, 2010, NY, NY -- Ambient Design
www.artrage.com
is sponsoring the first annual MobileArtCon at NYU ITP (Interactive
Telecommunications Program) at the Tisch School of the Arts, October
22-25, 2010 in New York, NY. Organized by the iAMDA (International
Association of Mobile Digital Artists), the conference is bringing
visual artists, designers, musicians and app developers together from
around the world to discuss art and music created on handheld
touchscreen devices (iPhones/iPads, etc.) from a creative, technical and
historical perspective. The event features artist presentations, app
demonstrations, and forums by app developers.
The event follows upon the recent launch of ArtRage™ for iPad app
by Ambient Design Ltd. ArtRage for iPad takes the award winning
technology of the ArtRage desktop versions and packages it into a
creative, artistic experience tailor-made for tablet computers.
“We went for a no compromise approach to achieve a highly optimized
drawing and painting experience for ArtRage on the iPad,” said Andy
Bearsley, Ambient Design’s Co-Founder and Technical Director. “ArtRage
for iPad brings the user a real paint feel with wet watercolors, as well
as industry-standard blend modes on tools and layers.”
ArtRage provides the highly satisfactory experience of actually painting
with oil or watercolors. It provides oil paints that smear and blend on
the canvas, watercolor strokes that merge to create soft, wet gradations
and each different tool interacts on the screen the way it does in
traditional art settings. The iPad user interface allows artists of all
levels to unleash their creativity and to spontaneously draw, sketch,
and paint with many artistic effects.
“Once you experience ArtRage, you cannot live without it anymore”, says
Sarah Brody, Principal at Sarah Brody Design, a Silicon Valley-based,
human interface design consultancy. “Now I will never miss an
opportunity to express myself artistically with my iPad with ArtRage
installed on it. With ArtRage you can almost smell the paint and feel
the paper’s texture.”
Classically trained artists will readily adapt to the intuitive user
interface of the digital versions of their tools like pencil, chalk,
watercolor and oil brush, paint tubes, palette knife and airbrush, as
well as canvas and paper. Children, K-12 students, and aspiring artists
are comfortable getting started with painting and drawing. Files can be
swapped with desktop versions of ArtRage on Mac and Windows for
additional professional features and collaboration.
The desktop versions ArtRage 3 Studio and Studio Pro contain all
features of the iPad version, along with additional tools such as
stencils, rulers, stickers, sticker spray, glitter tools, custom color
palettes and more. ArtRage is available on Windows and Macintosh, and it
supports Wacom tablets and Interactive White Boards (IWB). ArtRage 3
Studio is also optimized for the new popular Windows 7 multi-touch
screens.
In addition, photo files can be imported and converted into paint,
reworked in oil or watercolor or serve as reference images while
drawing. With its image tracing capabilities, ArtRage can select colors
automatically for every new stroke. The ArtRage family of software
products provides an affordable electronic canvas with a range of tools,
colors, and palettes never seen before while maintaining the art studio
experience familiar to artists, hobbyists, and casual painters.
Special Promotional Pricing for ArtRage for iPad
For the duration of the conference – October 22nd through the 25th,
2010, ArtRage for iPad is available for the promotional price
of US $3.99 as compared to its normal price of US$6.99 at the
Apple iTunes Store. For more information on ArtRage, see website

ALIBRE DESIGN
BRINGS BRIGHT IDEAS TO KIDS & ADULTS AT TEDxSMU & TEDxKIDS 2010
TEDx Non Profit Events Provide
World Changing Ideas
Short, Exciting Presentations by
Astounding Thinkers Inspire All
Dallas, TX, October 21, 2010 - Alibre, Inc.
www.alibre.com, the
developer of the world’s most affordable professional 3D design
solutions, announced today that it co-sponsored and participated in the
non-profit TEDxSMU and TEDxKIDS 2010 events, bringing the best ideas
of today’s minds together for two days of technological inspiration for
the next generation of scientists, engineers, artists, doctors,
marketers, DIYers, inventors and entrepreneurs.
Held last
week in Dallas, Texas, TEDxSMU & TEDxKIDS merged interesting people from
around the world in the areas of technology, entertainment and design,
supporting world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. Short,
exciting presentations by astounding thinkers on a broad array of
topics, ranging from the science of yo-yos to space exploration,
inspired both kids and adults alike. “We are honored to be involved with
TEDx and TEDxKIDS -- prestigious events that take students out of their
everyday classroom environments and bring them into a setting where
their teachers are the people actually thinking and executing big
ground-breaking ideas,” said J. Paul Grayson, CEO of Alibre Inc.
TEDxSMU Skunkworks Team Create GPS Vehicle Controlled via Cell Phone
with Alibre Design
Alibre Inc. helped bring the TEDxSMU event to Dallas
through its key sponsorship, and provided two presenters with
Alibre’s award winning design software,
Alibre Design. One of
the key TEDxSMU presenters, Nathan Huntoon, Director of the
Innovation Gymnasium, Southern Methodist University (SMU), showed a GPS
controlled unmanned vehicle activated via a cell phone interface, which
was created in the SMU
SkunkWorks Lab by Huntoon’s
students, including co-presenter Austin Hodges. The SkunkWorks
Team used Alibre to design and place all the parts of their vehicle,
before they ever built it. “What is amazing, is the students
designed the vehicle in 3D first and when it came time to fit all the
parts together,
every piece fell in place perfectly,” said Huntoon. The unique
vehicle can be seen live at TEDxSMU at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvV0CnNgesA.
TEDxKIDS Showcases Alibre 3D Designed Anodized Yo-Yos for Master Play
At the TEDxKIDS
event, inventor Mark
Mankiewicz brought his
String Theory YoYos Team to
wow the crowd. Mankiewicz used Alibre Design to invent a line of
professional aluminum yo-yos, sending his 3D model over the Internet to
be mass produced. Selling all over the world, these brightly colored
yo-yos are anodized and laser engraved for master play using advanced
yo-yo techniques. While yo-yo experts, Jamie Larkins, Mason McCall, and
Leo Qin, amazed everyone with their
skills, Mankiewicz spoke of
how he created his business, inspiring the kids with his “can do”
attitude. “It is a great honor to present at TEDxKIDS. I have always
been a fan. I was hoping to convey a message of hope to future
entrepreneurs, that anything is possible and never listen to people who
tell you it can’t be done. If your heart follows your passion, you can
never fail.” See the video at:

EE Times Features Alibre! "The folks
at Alibre have developed an incredibly powerful –
yet easy to use – 3D CAD program called Alibre
Design that will have you tap-dancing with delight."
- Product Review
-
- Mega-powerful
3D software only $99!
- Clive Maxfield

In the past, the only thing
electronic design teams had to worry
about was – perhaps not surprisingly
– the electronics part of the design
(chips, circuit boards, etc.). But
with today's sophisticated products,
it's becoming increasingly necessary
to develop the electronics portions
of the system in the context of the
enclosure in which they will reside.
There are some very clever 3D CAD
tools out there, but many of them
first saw the light of day decades
ago, which often means that they
have evolved over time to include
layer upon layer of code (you really
don’t want to see what the deeper
layers look like – you should wear
your thigh-length rubber wading
boots if you decide to plunge into
the mire).
The other downside about really
powerful 3D CAD tools is that their
price-tags tend to make your eyes
water. If you're not careful, you
can easily end up spending $10K...
$20K... $30K... or more. This might
not be a problem if you are a
multi-million dollar company, but
what do you do if you are a smaller
design house, or perhaps just a
hobbyist who desperately desires
access to this sort of technology?
Well fear not my braves, because I
have seen the light...
I have just been exposed to a feisty
little company called Alibre (www.Alibre.com).
The folks at Alibre have developed
an incredibly powerful – yet easy to
use – 3D CAD program called Alibre
Design that will have you
tap-dancing with delight. Alibre
Design is applicable across the
board, from hobbyists to
enterprise-level companies, and from
creating simple 3D puzzles to the
most sophisticated designs in the
Industrial Equipment, Aerospace,
Transportation, Consumer Products,
and Electronics markets (to name but
a few).
Consider the following image of a
1:87th scale railcar created by a
user. If I didn’t know better, I
would swear that this was an actual
physical model as opposed to a 3D
rendering:
Alibre Design's graphical user
interface is as easy and intuitive
to use as you could hope for. You
start off by creating "Parts" (3D
models of individual components).
All of the dimensions and other
aspects of the parts can be defined
using parameters and equations,
which facilitates your making
changes and fine-tuning things.
Next, you move up to create
"Assemblies" (parts that are grouped
together to form working models of
your designs). As soon as you've
created an assembly (or a part for
that matter), you can generate
photo-realistic 3D images that are
indistinguishable from the
manufactured product, rich projected
2D views for documentation, a build
of materials (BOM), and so forth.
You can also export your projects in
file formats suitable for
fabrication by 3D printers or
computer-aided manufacturing
machines.
One really cool feature in the
latest release (see below) is that
you can create a 3D object and then
convert it into a folded piece of
sheet metal and export the design
data required to cut the 2D sheet
metal in such a way that it can be
folded back into the 3D shape (if
you see what I mean).
As I already mentioned, one of the
great things about Alibre Design is
that it's really easy to learn and
use. It comes with in-built
tutorials, plus there are a wealth
of videos and other resources on the
Alibre website (Click Here to see
some Quick-Start videos).
Another cool thing is that
everything is tied together via a
relational database. What does this
mean to you? Well, suppose you
create a library of 3D parts and
then you use these parts to create
several different assemblies. As
part of this, for each assembly you
create a suite of 2D projections
with dimensions and suchlike. Now
suppose that you modify one of your
original parts in some way.
Obviously, if this change means it
will no longer "work" in your
assemblies warning bells will sound,
but I'm thinking of a more subtle
modification like a slight change in
appearance. The point is that you
don’t have to go back through all of
your assemblies and associated 2D
projections laboriously requesting
updates – everything is
automatically taken care of for you
(I like that).
But wait, there's more, because
there's also the Alibre Powered
website (www.AlibrePowered.com).
This is like a really cool social
networking website devoted to users
of Alibre. This is where folks
showcase their work and exchange
models they've created and swap
hints and tips and suchlike. For
example, one guy uses Alibre to
design really cool watches as shown
below:
-
-
- Alibre Design runs on any PC
running Windows XP and above (by
which I mean Windows Vista and
Windows 7). There are currently
three flavors of the product: the
Personal Edition ($99), the
Professional Edition ($600), and the
Expert Edition ($1,200).
The Personal Edition is ideal for
individuals, entrepreneurs, and
small companies. In addition to
creating the 3D models themselves,
you can generate some very nice
looking 3D renderings of your models
along with 2D projected views and
BOMs and so forth. However, the more
sophisticated photo-realistic
renderings can only be created with
the Professional and Expert
editions.
Both the Professional and Expert
editions also include high-end
capabilities like Finite Element
Analysis (FEA), which allows you to
evaluate your design's ability to
withstand heat, pressure, weight,
stress, and so forth. Of course the
Expert edition contains even more
"goodies", like the ability to
perform motion analysis – that is,
to model parts moving in relation to
each other.
The current version of Alibre Design
was the winner of Maker Faire
Detroit’s "Editor’s Choice" 2010
Award. Furthermore, the folks at
Alibre have just given a sneak-peak
of the next generation of the
product – Alibre Design 2011 – at
the World Maker Faire in NY.
In addition to all sorts of hot new
features – such as the ability to
convert a solid part into sheet
metal – Alibre Design 2011 includes
a full port of the code to C#,
making it the first native 64-bit
version, which is important for
demanding users that want to create
designs of enormous size and
complexity.
I could waffle on about this for
hours, but instead of that, why
don’t you test-drive a trial
version? For more information on
Alibre Design and a free trial,
please visit

tell them "Max says Hi").

You scoff, but it's true. Do you honestly think Tiger
Woods has the luxury of looking down as his golf glove while on the
Masters' greens and seeing if his grip is too tight? Indeed he doesn't,
nor will he ever if we understand anything about PGA regulations.
Germany's own Sensosolutions has just revealed what it's calling the
planet's first "digital golf glove," with the $89 SensoGlove boasting a
handful of sensors that "continuously read the user's grip pressure." In
real-time, users are shown that data on the sweat-proof 1.2-inch LED
monitor, and it's even capable of outputting information via aural
commands. Put simply, it can give you a warning if you're exceeding your
target grip pressure level, and it can even show you exactly which
fingers are squeezing too tightly. What it can't show you, however, is
just how closely your wife is monitoring your extracurricular phone
activities -- but hey, there's always version 2.0, right?

- Is there a golf training
aid that can give you real-time measurements of
grip pressure, and alert you if you are gripping
the club too tightly?
- The SensoGlove does just
that. From a German company called
Sensosolutions, the SensoGlove is a golf glove
that has built-in digital sensors at key
pressure points, and a 1.2-inch LED display to
show their readings.
A golfer wearing a SensoGlove swings the club
and receives real-time audio and visual feedback
on grip pressure. If the golfer is gripping too
tightly, he'll know it - right down to which
finger(s) are overgripping.
The glove part of the SensoGlove is constructed
using cabretta leather. The gloves are available
in RH and LH, in men's and women's versions,
sizes small to extra large, with an MSRP of $89.

ANNOUNCES SENSOGLOVE WORLD’S FIRST DIGITAL GOLF GLOVE
PERFECT GIFT FOR GOLFERS FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Patented Digital Golf Glove Instantly Corrects
Grip for Continuous Real-Time
Feedback @80 Times per Second for a Consistently Accurate & Powerful
Golf Swing
September 21, 2010, Aachen, Germany –
Sensosolutions
www.sensoglove.com, a leading provider of innovative sports
analysis, motion and performance measurement systems, announced
today SensoGlove, the world’s first golf glove with built-in
digital sensors that continuously read the user’s grip
pressure to ensure a consistently accurate, smooth and powerful golf
swing. SensoGlove’s small, sweat-proof 1.2-inch LED digital
monitor analyzes the pressure of the swing through highly responsive
sensors placed throughout the glove. Just swing the golf club
to receive real-time audio and visual feedback at 80 times per
second by the small and highly responsive sensors warning you if
you exceed your target level of grip pressure. The patented
SensoGlove even shows you which fingers are gripping too
tightly, so you can adjust your grip accordingly.
Perfect Gift for the Holidays for Golfers
of all Levels – Makes Learning Golf Easy & Fun
Made of the highest quality cabretta
leather, SensoGlove is the perfect gift for the holidays for golfers
of all levels. Everyone that has tried to learn golf knows how
hard it is to achieve the perfect light grip necessary to swing the
club correctly every time. Most beginners grip the golf club
too tightly causing a bad swing and even injury. With
SensoGlove, all golfers, from beginner to advanced, can quickly
learn how to hold the club, avoiding bad habits and improving every
part of their game, from backswing, downswing, impact,
follow-through, to driving, putting, and chipping.
SensoGlove Avoids the Death Grip
“Every golfer
wants to hit the ball far and the natural instinct is to swing
harder and faster,” said David Bauer, President, SensoSolutions.
“But trying to swing with more power causes a death grip, creating
tension in the hands, wrists, arms and shoulders. The result is a
less than smooth swing and, even worse, tightened muscles. Tight
muscles result in slower – not faster – club head speed.”
Emphasized by golf instructors throughout
the world, grip pressure is a very important skill for all golfers
to learn. Using SensoGlove improves rhythm and timing, higher
club head speed, and a more efficient and repeatable golf swing. To
use SensoGlove, golfers should first try it in the driving range to
test various pressure settings until they find one that gives them
the perfect swing. The grip pressure settings can be stored in
SensoGlove’s memory to use throughout the swing, allowing you to
exert just the right amount of pressure for a natural, effortless
swing. During practice, golfers can set the monitor to low to high
sensitivity from 1-18. The highest settings (13-18) are the most
sensitive and encourage a very light grip pressure, particularly
useful when chipping and putting. The lowest settings (1-12)
are less sensitive and are designed to help golfers develop a
lighter grip.
SensoGlove is available immediately
online at
www.sensoglove.com and through regional sales partners and golf
schools around the world for both men and women in right or left
hand configurations, sizes small to x-large, priced at $89
(replacement gloves are available for $25). Made of
the highest quality cabretta leather, the built-in digital monitor
can be removed to use SensoGlove as a regular golf glove. For more
information, please visit

By Ashlee Vance,
New York Times
A wealth of design software programs, from
free applications to the more sophisticated offerings of companies including
Alibre and Autodesk, allows a person to
concoct a product at home, then send the design to a company like Shapeways,
which will print it and mail it back.
“We are enabling a class of ordinary people to take their ideas and turn
those into physical, real products,” said J. Paul Grayson, Alibre’s chief
executive. Mr. Grayson said his customers had designed parts for antique
cars, yo-yos and even pieces for DNA analysis machines.
“We have a lot of individuals going from personal to commercial,” Mr.
Grayson said.

"Personal” machine tools and inexpensive CAD let one-man
shops straddle the line between traditional manufacturing and more current
approaches.
No doubt, trendsetting approaches to so-called personal manufacturing have
turned old-school ways upside down by giving almost anyone the means to make
stuff. Over the last few years, Machine Design has featured articles about
several of these approaches. For example, “Fab it Now” (May 22, 2008)
discusses the development of a “personal fabricator,” an additive machine
about the size of a microwave oven that anyone can purchase for a few
thousand dollars. The builders used it to 3D print everything from robot
parts to small working batteries. And “Rapid Prototyping ‘On the Cheap’”
(January 14, 2010) talks about how mixing social networking with digital
fabrication is a recipe for rapid mass customization. In addition, “Social
Networking in Engineering” (May 19, 2009) discusses how social-networking
technologies such as blogs, wikis, and RSS feeds are changing how engineers
and manufacturers work.
Software helps democratize design
According to Max Freeman, vice president of marketing at Alibre, Richardson,
Tex., its CAD software targets “midnight engineers” — individuals in the new
economy trying to start up their own businesses. “Inexpensive programs such
as ours facilitate the democratization, if you will, of technology,” he
says.
The basic version of the 3D CAD software costs $97. “Previously, our
software ranged between $1,000 to $2,000,” says Freeman. “Our intent was to
open the door for hobbyists and home guys who couldn’t afford higher-end
packages. To an extent, this approach was successful, but at that price we
still didn’t really grab them. The $97 version, though, our bread-and-butter
software, has had a great response. We also provide CAM software for about
$4,000, much less expensive than the mainstream-system costs of $10,000 to
$30,000.”
Alibre users make everything from simple trinkets to full assemblies with
3,000 parts, says Freeman. “For example, a retired Air Force officer designs
wheelchair systems in 3D CAD that let disabled vets get into a good-looking
hot rod and drive it instead of grandma’s van,” he says. “Another guy
designs special brackets for car seat belts so short people don’t get choked
by the belt. Yet another individual makes aluminum yo-yos, which, believe it
or not, are hot among a certain global young set. All of these individuals
make a living manufacturing something.”

Strategy: "Getting More by Charging Less"

Software developer Alibre markets its high-end computer-aided design (CAD)
application to manufacturers, inventors and hobbyists looking to generate
3-D models of new products or spaces. Last summer, Alibre, looking to boost
sales in the midst of the recession, decided to do something extremely
risky: It dropped the price of its base product—Alibre Design Standard—which
in the past had sold for $999 per seat to $99. Maintenance and support,
which at the time cost $299, was not included in the $99 price. The company
was hoping the new, lower price would get people to try out the program and
possibly upgrade to one of the other versions of the program—either at
$2,000 or $5,000.
“We had a lot of internal debate about it, and there wasn’t universal
approval. I knew it was risky, but it was something I wanted to do to take
some risk to get some attention,” said J. Paul Grayson, chairman-CEO,
Alibre. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to launch a marketing
program that would really get some attention.”
Alibre marketed the program using outreach to bloggers and online technology
sites. The company also debuted its own blog post and publicized it
socially. “We contacted the best bloggers and let them know we were getting
ready to launch the initiative. We knew that people would write about it,”
Grayson said. The company was also hoping that the bloggers would take the
new program viral, tweeting about it or posting about it on industry forums.
The response from the industry, as well as from previous and new customers,
varied. “It generated a fair amount of controversy,” Grayson said. “We had a
lot of customers asking how we could sell a product at $900 off, and other
people saying the move was desperation on our part. No matter how you look
at it, though, it generated an enormous amount of buzz and news coverage.”
It also generated at least a little ill will. Alibre was forced to deal with
a segment of customers who—after purchasing the product at the $1,000 price
point—were upset. “We talked to them and, if possible, gave them an upgrade
to the next version or gave them free maintenance so they felt like they
were getting a better deal.”
Even with the negative response, the pricing move and marketing campaign
that supported it had a huge effect on the company’s bottom line, Grayson
said. Last August and September, when the offer was being heavily promoted,
Alibre saw four times its normal sales volume and revenue that was 40%
higher than the two previous months. The program was so successful that the
company decided to stick with a lower price point for its entry-level
product.
Today, the revamped product lineup includes the $99 Alibre Design Personal
edition, a Professional edition pegged at $599 and an Expert version, which
sells for $1,199. Even with the lower price points, the strategy seems to be
working, Grayson said. “Our volumes [today] are more than double when you
compare July 2009 to July 2010, and revenues and profits are higher, too,”
he said. “We’re also seeing increased market share.”
Grayson said he would suggest that every company look at pricing, especially
now when, “frugality is fashionable.” If you do embark on such a program,
marketing becomes a huge enabler, he said. “Companies can use price as part
of their messaging to customers to let them know that they understand the
financial pressures everyone is under.”

MAGAZINE'S REVIEW OF THE GREAT KAT'S "BEETHOVEN'S
GUITAR SHRED" DVD!
"Beethoven’s
Guitar Shred
marries Classical and metal in ways few might have
imagined possible. One of the fastest and most
accurate guitarists in the genre. The Great Kat
dances through his [Paganini's] intensely intricate
Caprice #24, on
both the guitar and violin, as though she were
channeling the great “son of the devil” himself.
The Flight of the Bumblebee
has been clocked in at three hundred beats per
minute, and has made me all but toss out my own
guitar with the trash. A furiously complicated,
multiple-guitar and violin performance of Bach’s
Brandenburg Concerto #3
showcases The Great Kat’s depth, and her ability to
layer sound upon sound, turning what could have been
a chaotic mess into a heavy metal masterpiece.
Beethoven’s Guitar Shred
one for the collection, and certainly one for the
ages." - DaVayne,
