Gadgets: Truly great sound from Brick dock

By GREGG ELLMAN

Wi-Fi makes printing easy from anywhere in the house Typically, when a brick and an expensive media player are combined, it's not a great combination.

Kidz Gear headphones are just that headphones designed for kids age 2 and up and are available in wired or wireless models.

The construction has soft padded ear cups, which swivel for comfort and are uniquely designed for kids' smaller ears.

An adjustable plastic headband connects the two speakers.

The wired model has a cord about 4-feet long with a standard 3.5-inch input jack to connect to just about any device. A volume control is on the cord.

A volume-limiting device works with the wired unit. This will plug into the headphones and the media device allowing parents to limit the upper range of volume available to kids.

If you choose the wireless model, a transmitter must also be purchased to connect to the device and the wireless model requires three AAA batteries.

To control the wireless headphones, an on/off switch and volume controls are located on the ear cup.

Gamers Set 'Endurance Record' With 50 Hours of Playing Around

AOL News (Aug. 5) -- The world likely won't remember July 19, 2010. But video game lovers would do well to take note of that day, as it marked a new benchmark for hard-core gaming.

Six gamers from the Netherlands broke the Guinness World Record for "endurance gaming" by playing 50 -- yes, 50 -- hours straight, shattering the previous mark set by Chirantan Patnaik of India, who played for 40 hours and 20 minutes.

You can watch a video (in Dutch) of the attempt and the rewards: a 1,000-euro check and a free set of controllers from the event's sponsor, TwistDock docking station. (It's not just nerds playing games -- there's a hot chick around 0:42).

Dutch Gamers Shatter "Endurance" Record

Game on! A group of six Dutch gamers broke the Guinness World Record for "endurance gaming" by playing for 50 hours straight.

The Dutch easily bested the previous record, beating it by nine hours and 40 minutes. That's the gaming equivalent of taking off your helmet and dancing on the opposing team's logo during after a Super Bowl touchdown.

According to official rules posted on the Guinness World Records Gamer Edition website, at least one member of the Dutch group had to participate at all times, only one game could be played for the duration, players could take 10-minute breaks every hour (or pool up to five breaks, or 50 minutes of break time) and medical staff had to be on site the entire time.

The gamers' public relations manager, Karen Thomas of Thomas Public Relations, said her clients chose "Red Dead Redemption," Rockstar Games' latest release, for its variety of game play options. It qualifies as an action-adventure game, which Guinness requires, but also offers multiplayer options and minigames within the game like Liar's Dice and Poker.

She also told me that the medical staff on site confirmed that the gamers were not on any sort of stimulant or pharmaceutical, although I don't know if coffee would count.

According to Thomas, although the rules actually allow for players to take turns, all six gamers played the entire time instead of going in shifts. They originally started to play as competition, to see who could outlast the others. But at the end, they united and finished at the same time as a team.

Here's the question I have to ask myself, though: While these six players exhibited honor in establishing their record, what if a future team tried to take the record by playing in shifts?

There's no doubt that 50 hours is a long time to do anything, even as a group. However, if a group of six or 10 or 20 decided to go for the record, they could take eight-hour shifts and sleep and eat all they wanted for weeks on end, so long as at least one of the team members played at any given moment.

One man only has the option to nap 50 minutes, at most, every five hours -- and that's only if he's sleeping right in front of the console and chooses not to potty the entire time.

It seems to me that the category for endurance gaming should probably be split into two separate feats, solo and group. Or, perhaps the rules should be altered to require all participants to play at once. Being able to create a team and play in shifts isn't quite fair if you're considering a solo effort viable. Which is something I think needs to be rectified before I take on the attempt.

Yep, you heard it here first. I intend to take the Guinness record for endurance gaming from these guys -- solo. Just me and the controller and 50-plus hours of sweet gaming goodness. Oh, and coffee. Lots and lots of coffee. Even though all six of my Dutch opponents played the entire time, I feel like the solo effort is the real achievement.

Bring it, Netherlanders.

Breaking a World Record for Gaming
By NICK BILTON

People are constantly breaking world records. This month alone, a record was broken for the longest tennis match, a mind-blowing 11 hours and 5 minutes. The record was also recently broken for the world’s largest salad, weighing in at 29,579 pounds. (No word on the salad dressing.)

But another, nerdier record, was shattered this week when six Dutch video game players went on a 50-hour, or 3,000 minutes, gaming marathon to break the Guinness World Record for longest period of time playing a video game.

The previous record was set last year by Chirantan Patnaik, an Indian gamer who played for 40 hours and 20 minutes.

The new world champions, who are probably sleeping right now, played the game Red Dead Redemption, a first-person cowboy game set in the early 1900s, for more than two days. The gamers played on Sony PlayStation 3 and used a special power docking station, TwistDock, to keep their video game controllers charged during their record-breaking exertions.

During the game, the players were allowed to take a 10-minute break every hour for humanitarian purposes — to use the restroom and eat.

The players were originally competing with each other to break the previous world record, but decided to band together to pass the milestone together. As a result, the six players shared a cash prize and the publication of their names in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The six winning gamers are Sven de Vries, Renzo Bos, Robbie van Eijkeren, Marcel van Waardenburg and Edward and Maykel Leest, who are brothers.

SIX GAMERS BREAK GUINNESS WORLD RECORD FOR NON-STOP GAMING

50 Hour World Record Title is Established

July 19, 2010, Rotterdam, The Netherlands -- Vogel’s www.vogels.com, the leading European market leader in Audio/Video & TV mounting solutions, announced today that the Guinness World Record for non-stop gaming has been broken by six Dutch gamers during a 50 hour gaming marathon that started on Fri, July 16th at 12:55 PM Central European Time (CET), in Dixons, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

The six gamers played Red Dead Redemption non-stop on a Sony PlayStation®3 (PS3TM)) using the TwistDock docking station to keep their controllers continuously charged.  The team of six champion gamers included brothers Edward and Maykel Leest from Boxmeer and Hengelo, Sven de Vries from Lelystad, Renzo Bos from Baarlo, Robbie van Eijkeren from Middelburg and Marcel van Waardenburg from Amsterdam.  The world record award was given out by an official Guinness World Records representative who was flown in from London especially for the occasion.

The previous official world record for non-stop gaming was set in September 2009 by Chirantan Patnaik from India with a time of 40 hours and 20 minutes, which was easily trumped by the six Dutch gamers.  As the competition progressed, the Dutch gamers’ solidarity grew and they decided to sit and end the competition together. The gamers made the unanimous decision to end the attempt after an impressive 50 hours for a new world record title.  In addition to the world record award, the new Guinness World Record winners received a cash prize of EUR 1,000 and six TwistDocks. “The contestants entered as rivals but left as friends,” said Gaz Deaves, official adjudicator of Guinness World Records

With TwistDock, the PS3 is Always Ready for Action

The Guinness World Record gaming event was an initiative created by Vogel’s to announce the new essential accessory for the PS3, Vogel’s TwistDock www.twistdock.com. With TwistDock, the PS3 is always ready for action -- even when the computer is off, the controllers are always being charged. And because of TwistDock’s ingenious turning mechanism, it’s easy to stow two controllers on the back of the TwistDock and, by simply turning it around, have the controllers available at the flick of a wrist and always charged.  There’s no more annoyance of losing controllers in sofa cushions!

Gerdi Vogels, CEO of Vogel’s Products BV said, “If you introduce a totally new product in the market which makes dead controllers a thing of the past, a new non-stop gaming world record is a fantastic statement underlining the core value of TwistDock.”

TwistDock will be available in the U.S. starting 4Q 2010 in time for the holiday season.  For more information, see the websites: www.twistdock.com and www.vogels.com.

The swank-looking TwistDock clears up clutter and adds a little style to your gaming area.

Vogel's TwistDock seems more like a lazy Susan on steroids--we like. It mounts your PlayStation 3 (Slim or original) onto a rotating platform that tidies up cords, provides charging docks for two controllers, and has an optional four-port USB hub built into it.

Vogel is known in Europe for its LCD mounts and TV accessories and is currently sold in 10,000 stores across the continent.

The charging stations for the controllers have a small attachment that connects to the mini USB port on the controller. LED indicators on the front indicate the charging status of both controllers. Red indicates that the port is empty, orange indicates a controller is currently charging, and green means it's fully charged. Albert Zeeman, VP Innovations and Alliances, stated that the TwistDock charges controllers three to four times faster than the PlayStation 3. In addition, both controllers will continue to charge without the PS3 having to remain on.

Zeeman went on to say that the TwistDock has been specially designed to match the PlayStation 3. All the curves, materials, and design considerations were specifically meant to make it look like a logical extension of the console.

Vogel also sells its optional CableSet, which has cords that match the TwistDock. The set includes a power cable and an HDMI cable that have right angle connectors to keep the cables from sticking out, maintaining the aesthetic simplicity of the setup.

The TwistDock will be available on July 11 at Dixons and Dynabyte for the introductory price of 79 Euros (89 Euros regularly), both stores are located in the Netherlands. US availability will begin in the fourth quarter of 2010.

ZDNet.com Features Digital Foci's Photo Book Digital Photo Album by Janice Chen - "Top Digital Camera Accessories for Father's Day" - "Brag Book Dad"!

Brag Book Dad
Sometimes also known as Grandpa, he’s the one that can’t stop showing off snapshots of the little ones. Whether he wants to pass photos around at the office or around the poker table, the Digital Foci Photo Book is an easy way to share digital snapshots. Forget about jockeying for position around a monitor, or passing about a clunky laptop or digital photo frame. The Photo Book is essentially a digital version of a paper photo album. In fact, with its classic leather case, it looks much like a photo album, but when you flip it open, there’s an 8-inch LCD that plays both photos and videos from the 4GB of internal memory, or directly from a memory card or USB storage device. The $189 device includes two card reader slots that support CompactFlash, SD, SDHC, MMC, xD-Picture Card, Memory Stick, and MemoryStick Pro memory cards, as well as a USB interface for photo, video, or music transfer. The built-in speaker is surprisingly loud (though there’s not much bass as you’d expect from a little speaker) and lets you play music in the background while displaying slideshows. Unlike most digital photo frames, the Photo Book supports raw images from a huge range of dSLRs as well as JPEG, BMP, GIF, and TIF image formats. The 800×600 pixel LCD’s viewing angle is a little limited, but since it’s really a personal viewing device (rather than a photo frame meant for display) it’s not much of an issue.

nd play the comments with each photo during photo playback. The Playlist feature lets you create unique photo slideshows that can be viewed on Picture Porter 35 or transferred to Digital Foci’s Image Moments digital photo frame for playback. Other features include audio and video playback, a built-in speaker, audio recorder with built-in mic, and audio and video output.

Edmunds.com Features Kidz Gear Wireless Car Headphones for Kids – News & Advice for Car Shoppers and Owners!

"We found that not only are these headphones ideal for younger kids, but they can also save parents money if the ones that came with a stock RSE system get lost or damaged."

Tech Tuesdays: Testing Kids' Headphones from Kidz Gear and Griffin
Edmunds.com Features Kidz Gear Wireless Car Headphones for Kids – News & Advice for Car Shoppers and Owners by Doug Newcomb! "We found that not only are these headphones ideal for younger kids, but they can also save parents money if the ones that came with a stock RSE system get lost or damaged."

Rear-seat entertainment (RSE) systems have become an essential element of family road trips for many people since they help keep kids quiet and occupied on long drives and allow parents some peace and quiet. But most headphones that come with factory RSE systems are typically designed for larger heads. Particularly with little ones, parents have to frequently adjust the fit of the headphones as well as their volume to keep kids happy. And many parents are also concerned about the effect that listening to movies or video games for hours via headphone can have on young ears.

So when we saw that two companies recently introduced headphones specifically designed for young heads and ears, we requested samples so that we could test them. And as a side benefit, we found that not only are these headphones ideal for younger kids, but they can also save parents money if the ones that came with a stock RSE system get lost or damaged.

The two headphone we tested are from Kidz Gear and Griffin Technologies, and the two companies take two very different approaches. The Kidz Gear heaphones ($29.99) are wireless and work with any OEM or aftermarket RSE system that uses infrared (IR) to receive an audio signal. Griffin's MyPhones ($39.95), meanwhile, are wired and only work with systems with wired headphone inputs. They also limit the volume to 85 decibels to protect young ears.

We tested the headphones with the help of a 9-year-old and 11-year old and in a variety of vehicles, and found that each pair has its advantages and disadvantages. But one thing they have in common is that they are much less expensive than replacement headphones for stock RSE systems.

We called the parts departments at several dealers and found that replacement headphones range from $160 for some Lexus models to $53 for some Dodge vehicles, although these are for dual-channel headphones that can tune in two separate audio sources, such as a DVD and a radio station. You can probably find them cheaper elsewhere.

After logging many miles with the Griffin MyPhone and Kidz Gear headphones, we can predict that you'll be happy with either pair. Better yet, our youthful testers gave them the thumbs-up.

ALIBRE 3D CAD SOFTWARE INSPIRES ENTREPRENEURS & START-UPS TO CREATE NEW INVENTIONS & GADGETS AT HOME

Alibre Designs Home Theater Speakers, Search & Rescue Robots, & Yo-Yos
Creates New Jobs & Spurs the Economy

Richardson, TX, June 15, 2010 – Alibre Inc. www.alibre.com, the developer of the world’s most affordable professional 3D CAD solutions, today announced new inventions created by Alibre Design users.  Because of today’s economy, people are becoming more creative than ever before, going into business for themselves and inventing new products.  From high-end custom home theater audio speakers, to search and rescue robots, and aerospace grade yo-yos, Alibre is inspiring today’s entrepreneurs to create new inventions, driving the economy and creating jobs.  With the new Alibre Design Personal Edition (launched May 2010 at the Maker Faire), the first low-cost, easy-to-use 3D design tool, it’s even easier for anyone to become an entrepreneur and set-up their own business by creating gadgets, products, and inventions to sell from their homes and garages!

Custom Home Theater Audio Speakers

Linn Audio’s www.linnaudionh.com custom home theater speakers tower at 7 feet tall and have the most beautiful crystal clear sound you have ever heard.  In founder David Linn’s search for perfection, he researched many different ways to make superior speaker cabinets, visiting dozens of cabinet makers.  Linn concluded that the only way to achieve the standard he was searching for was to make the cabinets himself.  He decided to use Alibre Design to create his own custom speakers to his exacting specifications.

Linn used Alibre Design and Alibre CAM software with a CNC machine, making what he calls the “asymmetric hexagon” design of the cabinet.  He designed the panels of the cabinet in Alibre Design and then used Alibre CAM to machine out the parts.  All parts of every speaker:  cabinet materials, drivers, crossover components, wiring, damping materials, were chosen for sonic quality.  The result is a completely handmade, beautiful piece of furniture, with sounds to satisfy the most demanding music lover.

“I like how in Alibre Design you can draw a rough sketch of the part you need to make and then go back and dimension it to exact specifications,” said David Linn, Founder of Linn Audio.

Search & Rescue Robots

Francisco Rodriguez, a Mechanical Engineering Masters student at the University of New Mexico, used Alibre Design in the MARHES Lab to create a robot based on the TXT-1 monster truck from Tamiya.  The robot was used to make simulations in a virtual world, with the ultimate goal to create a search & rescue robot.  Each robot was outfitted with a control board, various sensors, and an onboard embedded computer.

Using Alibre Design’s powerful 3D tools, Rodriguez added an odometer and extra shock absorber on each of the front wheels and an aluminum plate to support the sensors and computer. “Learning how to use the basic functions of the software was really easy, plus the tutorials were helpful when I didn’t know how to do something,” said Francisco Rodriguez, MARHES Lab, University of New Mexico.

He then developed algorithms to efficiently fulfill specific search & rescue tasks by communicating through network systems, cameras, and ultrasonic ranger sensors.  These robots later would give aid to humanitarian rescue missions, for example, the recent earthquake in Italy.  “This technology could be implemented to search for victims in mine fields, collapsed buildings, or for structural inspection,” Rodriguez concluded.

High-Tech Precision Yo-Yo for Serious Players

String Theory Yoyos’ www.stringtheoryyoyos.com Remnant yo-yo is the first product from owner and designer Mark Mankiewicz.  Using Alibre Design software, Mankiewicz engineered a new professional grade yo-yo that’s precision machined for maximum stability and balanced-rim weighted for maximum spin time.

String Theory Yoyos began with the idea of designing a top-of-the-line precision yo-yo made from aerospace grade aluminum and premium steel bearings.  Mankiewicz devised the two butterfly-bell halves to form an exact weight.  “Alibre allowed me to calculate the physical properties after each design change so I could ensure I was within regulation.  After I sent them to get machined, the virtual prototype and reality matched to within .5 grams,” said Mark Mankiewicz, owner String Theory Yoyos. “Yo-yos may seem like toys, but there is a lot of physics going on in terms of getting an optimal one.  I performed a cross-sectional weight distribution analysis to get the weight perfect for maximum spin time.”

Working in Alibre Design Expert to make a sketch of the body and revolving it around the axis, Mankiewicz then cut away the bearing seat to allow for a special high-end stainless steel yo-yo bearing.  He also designed special grooves for silicon pads that cause friction on the side walls allowing the yoyo to come back up quickly.  The end result is a yo-yo meant for serious players with a bright and vibrant anodized aluminum coat that comes in jet black, blood red or midnight blue.

Thinker, Tailor, Soldier, Maker: Snapshots from Maker Faire Bay Area

Desktop Engineering Features Alibre by Kenneth Wong! "The maker-tinkerer phenomenon, one of the cornerstones of American entrepreneurship, is as old as the country itself. It gave us Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford, Steve Jobs, and Bill Gates, among others. What’s new is the fast-growing maker communities, fueled by the rise of social media and the plunging cost of technology."

On Saturday May 22, as midday approached at Maker Faire Bay Area, I was frantically trying to reach Paul Grayson, CEO of Alibre. It was 30 minutes past our appointment. He was somewhere in that swelling tide of people (estimated 90,000), rolling through 48 acres of fairground. His PR firm has provided me with his cell phone number and his booth number, but neither was of much help. When I got a hold of him on the phone, his voice was drowned out by the sound of whirling gadgets and buzzing electronics. The map that came with the show guide didn’t include booth numbers. I was about to give up when I stumbled on him in the press room, giving an interview to a reporter.

Maker Faire, an annual event organized by editors of Make magazine (”Makezine” for those in the know), attracts the do-it-yourself types with a knack for arts, crafts, and science. Know how to put together an autonomous robot that tosses balls? Want to learn how to turn your old cigar box into a mandolin? Have a solely-for-pleasure engineering project you want to showcase? This is where you might come to teach, learn, or share.

The maker-tinkerer phenomenon, one of the cornerstones of American entrepreneurship, is as old as the country itself. It gave us Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford, Steve Jobs, and Bill Gates, among others. What’s new is the fast-growing maker communities, fueled by the rise of social media and the plunging cost of technology.

For engineering software developers like Grayson, this is a few field of opportunity, with plenty or unclaimed pastures and prairies. With a 3D modeling package selling for $99 (less than the price of an iPod Nano), Grayson believes his product has an advantage over Autodesk, SolidWorks, and other big names among this exploratory, hobbyist crowd. That’s why the six-foot-tall Texan (one of the few donning a dark suit at the fair) is marching down the aisles, rubbing shoulders with DJs who transformed their music into psychedelic colors, a Burning Man crowd that reprised their pyrotechnic centipede, and a composer who automated a traditional Indonesian orchestra (the contraption is dubbed The Gamelatron).

Personal CAD
Two days before he flew down to California for the fair, Grayson had his PR people issue an announcement. “Alibre announces Alibre Personal Edition, for entrepreneurs and inventors at Maker Faire.” It’s meant as “an industrial-strength, parametric solid modeling system with integrated 3D solid modeling, part and assembly design, associative 2D drafting, and STL export, all at a hobby-friendly price.”

“We want to make it possible for ordinary humans to make things,” proclaimed Grayson. “And that’s really what Maker Faire is all about. Of course, we’re focused on a particular type of things — mechanical products that’s precise, need to be manufactured.”

People who routinely use CAD programs are no stranger to Alibre. Last year, Grayson stirred the engineering software community by slashing its software’s price from $999 to $99. The Personal Edition is what Alibre has been selling for $99 first, later for $97, then back again for $99.

So why negotiate the $3 difference? Grayson admitted, “I’m kind of a crazy marketing guy at heart. I try things. Sometimes my own staff get mad at me because I keep changing it. But it’s part of my nature to want to try new things, experiment, and see how people would react to it.”

In the past, average people couldn’t afford to cut, finish, and assemble their own custom robots, because manufacturing facilities weren’t (they still aren’t) designed to cater to tinkerers looking for a low-volume production run. But today, with an affordable 3D modeling package, you could export your design as an STL file and print it (yes, print it in 3D) at a service bureau. The same workflow has spawned a viable industry revolving around printing customized avatars (from such online games as World of Warcraft or Second Life).

Lost In the Tradeshow Crowd? Eight Proven PR Tips to Attract Attention, Coverage and Customers

Bulldog Reporter Article by Karen Thomas, Thomas PR "Lost In the Tradeshow Crowd? Eight Proven PR Tips to Attract Attention, Coverage and Customers"

Attending and exhibiting at tradeshows (such as CES, E3, CTIA, Toy Fair, Food Show, etc.) are key to a company's success. At tradeshows, you will meet potential customers, retail sales reps, and top distributors all in one place. But how do you get their attention over the noisy din of a trade show, so they'll stop by your booth and you can pitch a sale? That's where strong public relations strategies come in.

A well thought-out PR strategy will generate maximum trade show press coverage at a minimal cost that will help you make the sale. This press coverage (magazines, newspapers, TV, radio, Internet, bloggers, show dailies and trade show awards) will ensure that sales reps are aware of your presence at the show, visit your booth and potentially buy from you over your competition. But press attending the show will only cover you if they think your news is exciting and newsworthy. Using the guidelines below will increase the chances of getting this crucial coverage.

  • Press materials and pitch: Interesting pitch notes should be sent prior to the show to ensure that press know your news ahead of time. Pitch notes and press releases should be exciting, concise and to the point, with your booth number and news right out front.

  • Press meetings: Schedule meetings with press prior to the show. Make sure you study their publication to see what they cover and if and how it relates to your market.

  • The pitch: When press stop by the booth, explain in just a few words what you're announcing, to gauge their interest. Journalists will make it clear if it fits their beat and if they want more info. Don't keep talking without looking for these clues.

  • Press kits, brochures, and business cards: Make sure you send plenty of press kits, brochures and business cards to the show ahead of time. Don't be one of those vendors that runs out of business cards and brochures on the first day of a four-day show.

  • Booth: Make sure your booth name and/or booth number is clearly visible so journalists won't get lost and miss your appointment.

  • Booth staff: Booth staff should be prepped to quickly explain basic info on products, pricing and availability to the press.

  • Social media: Post all trade show announcements and up to the minute photos on Facebook and Twitter.

  • Trade show events: Attend networking events at trade shows to network with press and prospective customers. Check out the journalists' favorite list for trade show parties and press conferences: "The Official KarenNet Party List."

If you follow the PR strategies above, you'll be ahead of the game at your next trade show.

At the many photo show taking place this year, including the bi-annual Photokina mega-show in September in Cologne, PMA in Anaheim, Imaging USA, WPPI, and PhotoPlus, etc., it’s easy to get lost in the crowd of many exhibitors. We asked PR expert Karen Thomas, President of Thomas Public Relations www.thomaspr.com, for some easy do-it-yourself PR tips to get attention and get the most out of your investment at photo trade shows.

Having known Karen Thomas for many years, since I was Editor-in-Chief of Imaging Insider and her company, Thomas PR, was launching Olympus’ line of digital cameras, winning a #1 spot in camera sales for Olympus. Thomas PR is a go-to PR agency for photo and consumer electronics companies, representing numerous ground-breaking technologies, from Lexar Media, Digital Foci, Unibind, Arcsoft, RocketLife and more, so I thought that she would be a good expert to talk to about PR tips for photo companies and photographers. Here are the main tips she mentioned for maximum PR at trade shows:

1. First of all, pick the right photo show for maximum exposure to your target market. For example, PMA is geared more towards the channel market, whereas WPPI and Imaging USA attracts more professional photographers.

2. If you have the budget, hire a PR agency to help you with crucial trade show media planning.

3. Contact the press ahead of the show to set up meetings at your booth. Make sure you research the press before the show to know what they cover.

4.Post your trade show news updates on Facebook and Twitter.

5.Prepare at least one press release targeted to the audience of the trade show.

6. Network at the show. Consult the Official KarenNet Party List for a list of insider events for networking opportunities: http://www.thomas-pr.com/01/index01.html

7. For photographers: bring a sample of your work, whether on a postcard or larger portfolio to show to prospects and the press. For photo companies: have enough brochures and press kits available to give press at the booth, at parties, and to stock the press room.

8. Be sure to send follow-up notes to press after the show.

Los Angeles, CA – Digital Foci www.digitalfoci.com, a leading provider of digital photography accessories for consumers and professional photographers, announced today a major new firmware update for the Picture Porter 35 (model PPR-350) high-capacity 250-500GB portable photo manager.  New essential features in the 1.2.1 firmware update include incremental photo backup for easier backup, full screen preview and selection for convenient viewing, USB mode selection for secondary backup to external USB storage devices, and new professional DSLR extended camera support for RAW, EXIF data, IPTC and histograms

Instantly & Securely Store and View Digital Photos, Music and Video Wherever You Go

Perfect for consumers, professional photographers while traveling, on vacation, or on photo shoots, Picture Porter 35 lets you instantly and securely store and view digital photos, music and video on its hard drive wherever you go.  It features a 3.5-inch color LCD screen for easy viewing; built-in hard drive with 250GB and 500GB capacities; fast copy speeds of 1GB of data under 90 seconds; and a multi-format memory card reader for CF, MMC, SD/HC Card, miniSD, Memory Stick, MS PRO, MS Duo, and xD-Picture card.  The direct miniSD card support, in particular, is a welcomed feature for videographers who take still images with a miniSD card on their digital camcorders.

New Features in Picture Porter 35 1.2.1 Firmware update:

  • Incremental Backup Convenience

The new Picture Porter 35 1.2.1 firmware update includes an incremental backup feature that allows you to save new photos to an existing folder in the Backup Directory.  This makes backing up photos even more convenient and improves the photo management features for professional photographers and vacationers alike.

  • USB Mode Selection for USB-Host Function – Connecting to External Hard Drives

The USB-Host function expands support for external hard drives connected to Picture Porter 35.  This provides a convenient and inexpensive method for making a secondary backup of critical photos.  In a simple two-step process, you can easily back up the photos on your memory card to Picture Porter 35 and then connect an external hard drive to Picture Porter 35 to make a second backup.  In addition to connecting USB hard drives and flash drives, you can also connect two Picture Porter 35 devices together to transfer files and share playlists between them.

  • Full Screen Preview and Selection – Easily View & Organize Photos on the Road

The new Picture Porter 35 1.2.1 firmware now adds the ability to preview your photos on a full screen, for a total of 4 different screen layout styles: Full Screen, 3x2 Thumbnail View, 5x4 Thumbnail View, and List View.  As you are reviewing your photos, you can take advantage of different file management tools, including Copy, Delete, Export, Rename, Sort by Name or Date, Create New Folders and Add to Playlist.  This is a quick and convenient method for photo management and rough editing while waiting at the airport or in the plane on your way back from a trip or photo shoot.  When you get back to your computer at home, you’ll have your photos organized and ready to get started on your post processing.

  • New DSLR RAW Support with EXIF & Histogram for Pro Photographers

Picture Porter 35 supports RAW images with zoom capability and EXIF/histogram viewing to let you examine photos in greater detail.  Firmware version 1.2.1 adds to the long list of RAW formats already supported by adding the following DSLR models: Canon 1D Mark4, G11, and 7D; Nikon D5000 and D3000; Sony A300, A330, and A550.  As newer models are introduced into the market, Digital Foci will add new RAW support with future firmware releases.  Picture Porter 35 already supports IPTC metadata display, so you can view information, such as headline, copyright owner, and comments that are embedded in the photos

“Not only does the Picture Porter 35 relieve you from worrying about limited memory card space for your digital camera, but it’s also the best device to help you keep all your photos in one, easy-to-manage location,” said Charles Huang, Director of Business Development at Digital Foci.  “Picture Porter 35 gives you the photo management features you need to eliminate bringing a computer on the road, makes it easy to sort through and organize newly acquired photos on the spot, and provides a great way to carry your entire photo collection to show and share whenever you need.”

About PeeWee PC

PeeWee PC is a leading producer of computer products for children, designed to meet the needs of both young end-users and their parents.  This means products that are both fun and durable, but most importantly, safe.  The PeeWee PC children’s introductory personal computer was the first of its kind – a safe, fun, flexible product geared just for kids.  Previously, parents’ only options in this category were electronic toys that emulate computer features or investing considerable time and money modifying existing adult computers to load appropriate children’s content.  For more info, see website at: www.peeweepc.comFollow PeeWee PC at Twitter: www.twitter.com/peeweepc or PeeWee PC’s Blog at: http://blog.peeweepc.com.
