Dr. Leilei Shinohara Dr. Leilei Shinohara is Vice President of R&D, RoboSense. With more than a decade of experience developing LiDAR systems, Dr. Shinohara is one of the most accomplished experts in this field. Prior to joining RoboSense, Dr. Shinohara was the Technical Lead for Asia OEMs at Valeo, leading Valeo’s SCALA® LiDAR project, the world’s first automotive grade LiDAR product. He was responsible for multiple programs, including automotive LiDAR, automotive safety products, and sensor fusion projects. Dr. Shinohara managed an international sensor product development team located in six countries, responsible for the development and implementation of systems, software, hardware, mechanics, testing and validation, and functional safety, building the first automotive grade LiDAR product. Dr. Shinohara is a graduate of the Tokyo Institute of Technology with a Bachelor’s Degree in System and Control Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Mechanical and Control System Engineering. In 2014, he received his PhD at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany for Electrical and Electronics Engineering. During his PhD studies, Shinohara focused on LiDAR systems and was involved in several sensor projects, including the design and simulation of optical sensor systems, optical quality measurement (MTF) systems, coherent Doppler wind LiDAR systems, and 3D LiDAR technology based on MEMS micromirrors for autonomous driving. As a LiDAR project manager and the chief engineer, Dr. Shinohara and his research team at KIT developed a LiDAR system which was later acquired by a German Tier 1 company.
