Unique gifts for the Mannish Boys in your life

I was 16 when I first heard Muddy Waters sing “Mannish Boy.” It was the live version on the album Muddy “Mississippi” Waters Live, featuring Johnny Winter, Pinetop Perkins and Willie “Big Eyes” Smith. Since then I’ve told anyone who will listen that I want that song played at my funeral. When I was a teenager I thought it was just a tough song. Still is. Little did I know the simplest interpretation of the title “Mannish Boy” would forever define me. I am best described as a boy trapped in a grown man’s body

As such, I am not immune to gadgets and toys no matter how old I get. I know I’m not alone. Consider the following unique gadgets when shopping for the Mannish Boy in your life. Father’s Day isn’t until June 16, but the earlier you plan for the Old Man the more likely you’ll be to buy him something more thoughtful than a fifth of cheap scotch. Dad doesn’t want that – well, he might – but he probably wants one of these.

SensoGlove is the first and only golf glove with built-in sensors that constantly read the pressure of your grip. Its makers claim, “Practicing with SensoGlove will teach you the correct grip pressure for a smooth, consistent swing that delivers greater distance, enhanced precision and lower scores!” Golf pros say keeping a light grip is an important part of the game. This is easier said than done, as it is difficult to learn exactly what they mean when they say “light grip pressure.”

“One of the worst mistakes I see amateurs make in chipping is gripping the club too tightly or changing their grip pressure from the practice stroke to the real thing. Most often that activates the wrists and leads to a quick, stabbing motion,” Tiger Woods told Golf Digest in 2006. The SensoGlove’s built-in computer actively monitors your grip with sensors placed throughout the glove. You get instant feedback at all the points of your swing, with audio feedback that warns you the moment your grip becomes too tight.

The glove’s computer is lightweight and, blessedly, sweat-proof. Four tiny sensors are sewn into the glove, which works and feels like any other golf glove. You dial in your pressure on a scale of 1 to 18 and swing away. The computer reads and displays your pressure, warning you if you exceed your target level and showing you which finger is gripping too tight.
